Biggest I have ever caught was a summertime 9-10 pounder. I was fishing pretty noobishly w/ huge doughballs & no chum on the deep side of the barge where there is a joint going towards the boat slips.Seen a few 10-15# buffs pulled out.
That was a long time ago though. The biggest carp I have ever seen, was back when I was about 10, some guy lipped a HUGE carp that just swam up in that well and hooked it on a line just to check it out. It was probably 2.5' long conservatively (My memory obviously may be corrupted).
But yeah, carp well is not always the best place to fish for carp and buffs. I see them caught the most during summer on the front left (looking as you walk to the front of the barge) side of the barge in 5'-15' of water. Watch out for steel cables on the area closest to the crack, which is a good place btw. They are pretty wary so Euro style hair rigs and other tricks might improve your catch. My baits gets sucked on and blown out most of the time.
