Anyone know why the water in toilets sways back and forth on windy days? I've noticed it a few times at other people's houses and just now at my house.
It's not a constant thing, but go watch and you'll notice it too.

Water less is held down by the barometric air pressure. At sea level on a standard day, there are 29.92 inches of mercury pressure holding the water level down. Strong, gusty winds create areas of higher/lower pressure thus resulting in white caps on the toilet water.

When I was in college as KANSAS, the wind would blow so hard at times that the resulting low pressure behind the dorms would pop the rear windows out of the cars like magic. You could always tell the upperclassmen....they rolled the windows down enough to equalize pressure so their windows did not break.

Didn't think about the vent pipes on top of the roof.

...uh, is there ANYTHING you don't know a little something about???? I always assumed the water towers were the cause because of the high winds we had around Lubbock, ya know, all the sloshing around...well, that didn't make any sense, did it? I'll shut up now.

I can see where something of this nature would be fun to watch however I would rather have some of what you are drinkin' or smokin' at the time you see these waves.

It's simple.

The "Tidy Bowl" man just upped the horsepower on his boat. He
went from a 5.0 HP to a 9.9 HP.

The resulting power in such a confined area is what is causing the waves.

It happens in everybody's toilets....except Eddy Hankin's...he has one of those "Incinimode" electric toilets....no water to slosh.

Dang smart-alecky Eddy, thinks he has to be soooo modern and all!

Hope this helps! \:\)

If you run the sewer line vents into the attic instead of through the top of the roof, you will enjoy calm waters in the throne. Of course, your attic might get a bit ripe at times...

HEHE this reminds me when I was working for the Roach Unit (TDCJ) in Childress. I got a call from one of my Officers who was working #1 Picket (the tower). He was always a joker. He said "Lieutenant I have a serious problem up here. I said WHAT. He said the winds blowing so hard my toilet is whitecapping lol."

Good old Paducah--I spent a summer there back in the early 70s.

For entertainment while visiting the toilet I take my laptop or some fishing magazine. I have even went as far as to read Southern Living magazine. But now I know, that there is something else to keep me entertained while I create splash back on my butt.

By the way, I think all those recipes in those mags are scratch and sniff, but they always smell really funky, wonder why???

My first suggestion would be to up grade to a double wide. That might stop it. Other than that I have no idea but I could try to make one up for you if it will help. That is a great observation. I am now waiting for a windy day to check in my home.

And I told you how to fix it...vent to your attic instead of out the roof.
