Hey Brent. I was stationed on Oahu for four years and what I had learned is that you can have a fantastic time a lot cheaper than you may anticipate. Stay away from the tourist traps and do more of the local stuff. Here is a site that is military friendly on Hawaii. Contact the Customer Service people and ask for suggestions. They should point you in the right direction. Here's the link:

Hope this helps and get well soon!

I'm from Kauai but since your staying at the Hale Koa I guess you'll be spending all you time on Oahu. No problem, there's a lot to see there and I'm sure you will make the best of it. If you do have a chance to travel to the neighboring Island, visit Kauai. Much slower than Oahu or Maui and you'll see real old Hawaii at it's best. Kauai is the Oldest Island and boast the Waimea Canyon, Waimea is where I was born and grew up in Kekaha. The North and South shore beaches is a must to visit. On the north shore you get to drive past 7 one lane bridges that takes you to the end of the road, so green you wouldn't believe it's America..

I wish you well, thanks for your service from a retired SFC.. Hope you fully recover and that you and your wife both enjoy Hawaii.

I only just saw this thread today. I live in Hawaii and work only about a quarter mile from your hotel, the Hale Koa. That's a nice hotel, and is almost exclusively used by the military. Have fun while you're here and DO NOT just stay in Waikiki. That is not a true representation of what the island has to offer.

I rented a harley on Kauai and rode up to the canyon last summer. The seenery was beautiful and the ride was great. It was cool on top. The people on Kauai where great. The coconuts are not anything to get excited over, to me anyway. The island is a fine place to visit though. You would think you are in MAI TAI HEAVEN. Still can't figure how they made them so good!
