I must have spoke to the wrong person last week at the Bass Pro in Grapevine. They only had certified scales to weight a record fish up to only 50 lbs.

I caught a big Blue @ Lewisville - and went to the following locations but NO Certified Scales!

Bass Pro - Grapevine
Academy - Lewisville
Sportman's Warehouse - Lewisville
Live Bait Outlet - Lewisville
Lewisville Feed Mill
Lewisville Fishing Barge
Corp of Engineers - Lewisville
Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area

I also called these locations but they also did not have certified scales for a fish over 50lbs:

Cabella's - Fort Worth
Lewisville Game Warden

I eventually got a hold of a friend that works for the Carrollton Post Office and they let me weight it on thier scales - official weight was 58 lbs - (shy of the lake record by 6 lbs)

I doubt the situation arises again for myself - but I wish it was easier to get one certified - I would bet that many Lake Records are not recorded due to this problem.

I know I have broken the record for flathead and blues on Lewisville a couple of times. Like you was unable to find certified scales over the years. At one time they would let us weigh them at Walmart in the Colony. Congrats on your catch though. Trust me there are some much bigger kitties in that lake \:\)

You can get your own scales certified. Even after the catch. Join the IGFA and send them your scale. For a small fee, once you have joined their membership, they will certify your scale.

This is exactly what I did with my middle sons world record, for his age group, smallmouth buffalo. The only catch is that they only certify scales up 100 lbs. For scales larger than that Joedy with TPWD recommedns Bastop Scales in the Austin area. I will be taking my 120 lb scale to them for certification on the 14th. I will be equiped with a 60 lb X 2 oz and a 120 lb X 4 oz.

Make sure the scales you purchase are good quality or they might fail inspection. Here are the 2 scales that I own;

I do not remember the name, however the current lake record blue was weighed on state recognized certified scales at a meat packing facility in Lewisville or Lake Dallas. I didn't catch the fish, my fishing partner Shannon did. I was the one driving around with it in the back of my truck (in a water trough) while we searched for certified scales. It was quite an interesting day.

Another option is to simply call the game warden for that area. He or she should know where certified scales are.

And by the way, that lake record blue was released back into the lake.

Here's a list from the TPWD of locations with certified scales.
I believe the best route is to get your own though. If you are fishing weekends it would be hard to get a certified weight.

I've got a Rapala Magnum XL Lock'n Weight scale. It certified from 1 lb to 126 lbs. It's not cheap and the certification wasn't cheap either, but it's in the boat and ready for when it's needed.

PM for details if you like.
