I made a quick trip to POC this past weekend. Dad also came down for a little relaxation. I spent saturaday replacing a skylight on the rv and the cool breeze left me undecided concerning where to fish on sunday. We slept in a little and ended up launching the boat about 8:30. The weather was perfect. Cool but not cold and calm. Dad had brought his heavy rods and wanted to try the Jetty. The ride to the jetties was quick and dry. There were several boats fishing the gulf side of the south jetty. We tried the hole at the end for a while with no action. Dad was unsuccessful at catching any bait for his large rods. So, he ended up baiting with frozen squid.
We moved to the channel side and found lots of sheephead biting on shrimp against the rocks. By culling through the smaller ones, we ended up with limit of decent fish.
This entire time Pop had his penn 209 set out off the back of the boat. We had both just culled small sheephead when the big rod gave a slight twitch. Dad made some comment about hardheads and went to check the rod. By the time he made it to the back of the boat, it had doubled over and drag was stripping. Obviously, it wasn't a hardhead. Dad fought the fish for a good while, but eventually wore out. He has been having health problems and just doesn't have much stamina. He handed the rod over to me, but the leader and egg sinker were already showing. He had finished the fight but didn't realize it. The fish was a 44" redfish and could have easily eaten a 1.5 lb bait but bit on a ball of squid the size of a golf ball.
We tried a few other spots at the jetty but only found sheephead. Later in the afternoon, we made a long run to Pringle Lake. My plan was to wade fish on of the passes on the falling tide. But, we misjudged the time and got to the pass just about low tide. We decided to wade anyway and fish the potholes around the oysters. We found some tailing reds but could not get within casting range. Rat reds were very willing to bite on silver spoons.
