Depends on how far along the cow is. Sometimes if they are 70+ days along or so you can go in and twist your hand side to side on the femoral arteries and they will be buzzing. That's a dead give away and you only have to go forearm deep. I am posting and holding my breath. This thread could take a serious dive at any moment...Was the question a test to check me out?

I was certified in palpation and AI right out of HS. That's back when I thought I wanted to be an Ag teacher.

Two things they stressed. Do only your own cows otherwise you will have all the vets in the county mad at you, and never, ever try any of this on a mare. Also, trim fingernails to the quick and file them close...Couple of other things...Use a post crossways in the area between you and the cow, and or wear a well fitting cup

I used to have some cow in me but alas I grew old and - well you know...We did have a small herd of Angus and they did good even though they didn't have the weight of most breeds...If your gonna eat em' yep go for it but unless you have a market for them you won't make much when it comes to poundage...

I've done it all also. Not much anymore. Price of cows bottomed and I made the move. Havn't actually checked one in several years. Did breed several for a friend last year, but that's about it.

Just put him in the chute and adjust the current...He's turned on for sure...Don't forget the catch cup.

I have hereford and black baldie cows...both work great. Mine are mostly commercial cows with a few older reg herefords. I mainly produce black baldie heifers to sell.

Grew up on a farm with Angus and Herford. For southern states it is best to go with a mix of these to breeds if you want good cattle that will bring a profit and good eating beef. Unless you want to get into special cattle keep it simple.

Heck just jump the barbwire fence and borrow 5 or 6 cows to find out what you like then return them.

For what it's worth, I always had the best results both in calving and at sale with Simbra bulls on about any breed of cow. It leaves just enough "ear" and heat tolerance to make a go in our Texas climate.

if you take my measurements and weight, I can probably be compared to a scaled down version of a cow

Thanks for the "help" guys..lol. Been doing some research and found a few sites similar to the TFF dealing with cattle. It's been a big help...

Everybody's heads feeling better today?
