Please name off some of the rod organizer companies that make a system for rod boxes on your boat.

Most definitely. Table Saw, Routers, Compound Miters, Drill Press and the list goes on......

Thought about just making one myself but would want to make it of ABS plastic or Carbon Fiber. I have the materials here to make my own Carbon plate but that would be a little over kill. My thinking was probably just as easy to get one that was already built.

I did check out the custom rod racks site. If you had the plate, it looks like you could do the work with about a two inch end mill for the butt end of the rods. The tips end would be easy enough with a hole saw and the proper sized tubes.

the tubes that golfers use in their bags for the rod tunes. drill the holes in a 1/4" plastic plate, and epoxy them in.

You can make the moosehead with a router on a 1/4" sheet of plastic. cut to fit. they attach to the boat with a couple 90degree-angle stainless brackets.

Keeb look at the vertical rod holders from BPS and think we can dis-assemble them and use them in the boat with golf sleeves ...

i'm sure we can come up with something

I went to Wal-mart and got a polywhatever plastic cutting board. I made a template out of cardboard for the inside of my rodbox. Cut the cutting board slightly large. Marked the holes for the golf tubes and cut the holes. I used masking tape around the golf tubes to "fit" them in the holes. It has worked great for several years now.

My Kitty didn't come with the organizer and since I didn't want to pay 250+ for aftermarket through BC I decided to build my own. Started out with a cardboard template to match the internal shapes of the fwd and aft rod box contours. Used treated 1/2 in. plywood faced with marine carpet. Purchased golf tubes from the golf store at the Highlands in Arl. Paid 25 bucks for 18 tubes. Used a hole saw for the holes and the tubes slide in with a good fit. Decided against sealing them in place with silicone sealant in case I want to take them out. Got some AL angle and made brackets and matched drilled thru to install the fwd part of the organizer. The rear part of the organizer is of the same construction and is slotted and there are bungee cords to provide a means of holding the rod butts in place. The only thing I would have done differently would be not to use the plywood. Because of all the cuts (slots) on one of the boards the plywood laminations are separating in one area. I am going to have to inject some glue to keep this from propagating further. I should have used a plastic phenolic sheet instead. All in all I am happy with the way it turned out. I don't have to deal with tangled rods and will have the capacity to store 9 rods per side. Lets see C-rig, T-rig, spinner bait, crank bait, jerk bait, Crappie rod etc. My wife thinks I'm nuts. instead of golf tubes that will break the end of the eyes if you have any rods over 6 feet go to lowes and get 160 psi pvc very light and comes in 10 foot length you can even have them cut to your size I had mine cut at 5 foot so my seven foot rods cant reach past them. Trust me you will be ready to throw the whole thing away after you break a couple rod tips off and you will ...trust me or read from other peoples post on same subject. Golf tube are 35 inches and if you rod box lid is 36 inches add it up the tips of your rods are sticking through.

Well the jury is still out on rod tip thing that you mention. It seems lately that on the good days to fish I either have honey-dos, father-dos, or work-dos that I have to get done. And when I have nothing to do the wind is blowing 30 mph and it is 30 degrees out. My rod box lid if my memory serves me correctly is around 42 so the 42 plus the 35 equates to 6.5 feet which means that my 7 ft rods will stick through and I will have to be careful when I pull them out. I considered PVC at first but decided against becuz I didn't have any hole saws to match. Bass Cat is one of my customers and when I was up in Mountain Home in November I had them show me what they do. They use the golf tubes but I was suprised to see that they cut them to around 24 in in lenghth. I asked them about that and they said they haven't heard of any problems. I would prefer that the whole rod would be encased by the tube but there is a trade-off on number of rods vs available area. Since the available cross-sectional area reduces as you go fwd at the 7 ft. mark I thought that I would have a problem if I used longer tubes. Unfortuanately you can't get up in there to measure what that is. BTW Happy New Year.

I use Stickjackets to protect my rod eyes. They work very well to keep eyes from hanging up on each other and on rod tube holders or just for carrying around protection. Their cost is a little high ( $7.00/ $8.00 ),but compared to a broken rod or damaged eye they are not so bad.

That's a good idea on the material there Slide_R. I may have to go check one out at the store.

Just so that it is known, my boat does have an organizer in it, I just don't like it. I think the positioning of the butt rest points could have been better thought out. Also, just a thing on my part, I want organizers in both boxes up front. I would prefer to use the driver side box as I am right handed.

As for the golf tubes, why not just cut the ends out of them? My boat is almost 22' long so I would assume that there will be plenty of room in the box that I wouldn't require such a long tube at the other end to protect the rods.

If you guys want a really good idea for the material to use for the rod holders that will not rot over time, use cutting boards. They are made from high impact plastic and are easy to cut and drill into, and are EXTREMELY STRONG. The one I built for my ranger over 4 years ago still looks new.

They are not hard to build at all. There was someone on the forum who posted a page with instructions and photos on how to do this several years ago.

I did my own using a polycarbonite cutting board. No holes, no screws in the boat. Holds 12 rods and haven't broken a tip since I built it. I used the high dollar golf tubes, not the Academy cheapos. The tube size is more consistant and the belled end is a lot heavier duty.

You can buy 1/2" plastic such as PVC or Polypropelene from any plastic supplier at very low cost. It cuts easy and can be fabricated with screws in predrilled holes. Several colors are available as well.

I will give you a shout. We could probably make up a couple of sets for both boats in an afternoon given we have all of the supplies.

You can use Jumbo Gold Club sleeves. The sleeves are about 1.00 each. Make a template in box out of cardboard, then get piece on lexan pop some holes. Slide the tubes in add clear silcone.The tubes have stops. Get a large zip tie wrap the together stick them in the boat and screw it in. Any questions give me a call.
