Don't know of anyone having GPS points but the guys who fish there often are pretty specific when talking about spots they've caught fish in the past.

They might be willing to share in a PM, but the lake is fairly easy to figure out with landmarks and such.

It really depends on what you are after, and this being the catfishing forum I would guess you are looking for cats.

Using the old standby's of fresh dead shad, and most any brand of cheesebait, but mainly "Big Marvs" or "Danny Kings" and fish under a cork along any of the rock riprap will put you into fish.

Usually you can head straight out from the ramp until you pull up to the "wall" and you will see the boats, and then just fish that bank all the way back toward those reed beds.

Along the dam is also good, and near the high lines up to the right from the launch.

It's easy to learn the lake, and using those simple guidelines you should find some fish!

Also if you do a search on Calaveras you will find plenty of reading and hints to help you out!

Plan on doing a lot of reading though, and good luck!

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Aiyeee, cajun. Welcome to the forum. Once of the best ways to learn the lake is to hire a guide to show you around. It is a good investment.

Here is an image I concocted to put some of the common places in perspective. I put some of the names there for lack of knowing any other tags. There are others but I am not positive where they are.

Don, this is one of the most informative pics of the lake I have come across. Archive this one, people! Thanks, Don! Now people can search the posts for hot spots!

Thanks alot guys, I have to admit that there are no nicer group of fishermen than those I have met and read on this forum. My wife and I took one of the young Air Force guys out today and we caught quite a few channel cats by the highlines and the inlet. These guys really appreciate these outings and then we bring them home and feed them some hot Cajun gumbo. My wife is a master in the kitchen. Thanks for the input and the map. IT IS TERRIFIC!! See you guys on the lake.

That is a fantastic report, Cajun!

Glad we helped, and I know that Airman is now hooked on Calaveras also.

Just a couple more trips out to the lake and you will be a pro!

Don't hesitate to ask questions, as that's what we do best around here.

Just remember if you can't get to the lake, just drop by here and swap stories!

Give that Airman a big thanks from us for his service, and thank you for thinking of those guys, and doing what you do, and thanks for the reply! Jimbo!

Cajun, my hat is off to you. I remember back when I was in the Navy, it was really nice to have a family act as a host. Being away from family while serving is VERY hard! I was very thankful for having a few families treat me like a long time friend when I was serving. Calaveras is a great lake for cats. Braunig is smaller and easier to cover more ground with in a smaller amount of time. Danny Kings seems to be the catfish bait of choice. Thanks for sharing the love of fishing!

Hey guys. I know this is a catfish forum, but I was lookin for a striper hot spot. Took a guided tour about a year ago and caught some near the dam, but was wondering if there was a better spot. Also, catch a lot of channel cats under the bridge, but havent seen a blue cat yet. Anyone know where thier hiding? Thanks a million.

Blues for the most part, are where you find them!

I don't usually target the blues and when I fish for cats I'm just looking for filets, and not trophy fish, but if I were I wouldn't fish where there is a lot of current such as directly under the bridge, and directly in the current.

Channels like current, and blues like to hang off, just out of the current and on the dropoffs.

I've also found that I catch more blues using fresh dead shad, or cut bait, than with the cheese dip baits, but that's just what I've found!

Concentrate on areas with flats and deep dropoffs, and rocks, if your looking for the big blues!

The hybrids are usually found near the dam, and the "wall" area ond along that rip rap, and near the water pump area in 181 cove.

Here is some good information on catching blues right here on this forum, and it would apply on any lake!
