Curious if any of us TFFers have any knowledge on the cattle industry. Thinking about adding a few pure bred Angus to my wife's grandfathers herd...anybody dabble?

Any serious input?

Cross-breeding is best for Angus. They can have a weak back.

thanks for your input, T-Man. Trying to find a price range that I would expect to pay for either open Angus or bred Angus cows to add...I know the "prices" can vary depending on what bloodline, breeders, etc....just like deer.
Just didn't know a decent "average" to expect. Hoping to find more knowledge here.

An Angus Herford cross is very good. My family had Herfords, my Mother-in-law still raises registered polled Herfords, and my uncle has reg black angus. we crossed them a while back - were a good cross and had some good white faces come out. For some reason the meat houses still like a white face on the cattle.

NAH - the cattle were mainly black with a pretty white face. The best have a black ring around the eye. I don't claim to understand the preference - just see it happen.

I may/may not have the opportunity to snag some awesome genetics in the near future, and am planning on starting small. Just to have a calf or two to sell a year, possibly have one cut for meat.

Cross-breeding is best for Angus. They can have a weak back. What?? Angus have the best calving track record of any breed. Mainly 'cause they have small calves. Cross 'em wrong (like with a Charolais) and you'll have troubles for sure.

All I know is my grandfather liked herford cows crossed with angus bulls. He had to quit ranching when I was young so I did not get to learn much about cattle.

Lovely.....Do you still have to go shoulder deep to do your testing bassman? Depends on how far along the cow is. Sometimes if they are 70+ days along or so you can go in and twist your hand side to side on the femoral arteries and they will be buzzing. That's a dead give away and you only have to go forearm deep. I am posting and holding my breath. This thread could take a serious dive at any moment...Was the question a test to check me out?

Two things they stressed. Do only your own cows otherwise you will have all the vets in the county mad at you, and never, ever try any of this on a mare. Also, trim fingernails to the quick and file them close...Couple of other things...Use a post crossways in the area between you and the cow, and or wear a well fitting cup

I used to have some cow in me but alas I grew old and - well you know...We did have a small herd of Angus and they did good even though they didn't have the weight of most breeds...If your gonna eat em' yep go for it but unless you have a market for them you won't make much when it comes to poundage...

I've done it all also. Not much anymore. Price of cows bottomed and I made the move. Havn't actually checked one in several years. Did breed several for a friend last year, but that's about it.

For what it's worth, I always had the best results both in calving and at sale with Simbra bulls on about any breed of cow. It leaves just enough "ear" and heat tolerance to make a go in our Texas climate.

Chad,
PM me with the sites you found. We are getting out of the horse business and getting back into cattle.
If any of you want a paint horse yearling cheap, let me know.

I used to kill a lot of cows. Worked in a slaughter house on the kill floor. Showed a lot of steers in High School. I like Maine Anju(sp) for show purposes. Those show steers get mighty expensive.
