I've already done the marlin and sailfish gig, possibly a bluefin tuna trip or something of that nature...

What is the probability of catching a bluefin if you actually go for them.

Is it like Marlin fishing where it can be pretty hit or miss? I know thats a stupid question bc all fishing is hit or miss, but you catch my drift

I would say your chance of catching a bluefin are around 1% or less in the GOM.

Literally. Now there was a guy from Plano that caught a 1200 pound or something near that about 5 years ago.

Well I would probably be fishing up in Maine or Mass. Just wanted to get some good ideas.

I'll probably just end up going to El Salto and go bass fishing since I have caught everything I have wanted to in the ocean exept a tarpon.

Go for the Tarpon...you won't regret it!! There are options for Tarpon now around Galveston in late summer. Fish the near off-shore waters about 5 to 8 miles off the beach. You get a lot of black-tips and jacks, but also there is a legitimate chance at catching Tarpon and some of them are huge.

Another option would be Florida in early summer...or Mexico, but the Tarpon run much smaller there, at least the places I've been.

Depending on the time of year, the Bluefin are pretty thick off the Carolinas as well. Catches of 5-10 on a day charter are not unheard of. I think Alaska would be a great destination (my next big trip). I have done sails in Mex that was awesome and did inshore and offshore in Venice this summer that were also good.

This time of year is supposed to be some of the best fishing for giant bluefin on the east coast - but be prepared to fish in some of the worst seas you can imagine.

Also, know this ... *clearing throat from high atop the mountain of wisdom*

If you are fishing on a licensed charter boat which has a valid permit for bluefin tuna ... and you CATCH a giant bluefin tuna ... that fish belongs to the boat, captain and crew. NOT to the paying passenger who caught it and paid for the trip.

I don't make this stuff up, and I don't make the rules; that's federal silliness at work. Most reputable private charters will give you a portion of the proceeds from selling the giant bluefin in the form of cash or a free trip in the future, and will also let you have a fair amount of fresh meat from the tail & head (the main carcass is what gets auctioned off).

If I had the money to spend on a 'fish of a lifetime' trip, I'd think giant bluefin!!

Thanks for all the reply's!!! Yea I did some research, there is one charter that I found that will pay you 1/3 of any bluefin over 73". They said "one" of their bluefish sold for 20k. WOW! I would love 1/3 of 20k, hell you can even split that 1/3 and I would be estatic!!!!

Although, I don't mind rough seas, I have never really been in the Atlantic other than a offshore trip in South Carolina. I would hate to pay 1500 bucks and be in a storm that is unfishable, or miserable for that matter.

I think tarpon fishing would be really fun, I would love to travel somewhere though. I want to get out of Texas and into some real exotic locations to catch one. I've been fishing Texas my whole life and would like to enjoy other rejions of the world (not that I dont LOVE Texas, but I want some diversity and some site seeing as well)

2 words, COSTA RICA!
.....OR.....
PUERTA VALLARTA!

Oh yeah, there's gobs of Tarpon in Costa Rica
and snook, and pargo, and roosters, and all the pelagics, too
Don't know if $1500 could get it done though. it'd be close.
good luck & tight lines

What month??? There are so many awesome places to fish, but the time of year has a lot to do with it.

Do you have any idea what species you want to target?

You might consider Peacock Bass in the Amazon Basin, it's pretty exotic and maybe even a little adventurous given the pirhanas, anacondas, black panthers (not the Huey Newton kind).

I would go to Coasta Rica...

The Chandelier Islands is a great place to fish for specks and reds too.

Some friends of mine own a fish camp in Panama. Check out:

Unforunately, I have not had the chance to go visit and check it out. A college friend of mine and her husband run the operation and I hear its killer. Check out their website for more info. Hope this helps.

haha I read that statement wrong and I thought it said "you" and your friends own a fishing camp. I was going to say, if you are trying to sell me a camp that you own, but you never have been to in Pananma? that might not be such a good idea =)

I have been to Costa Rica once and Key West many times.
For light tackle , multispecies fishing and nightlife,
Key West can't be beat. Like no where else in the world.

ever caught a kind salmon from the banks of an alaskan river? It is quite a rush!

It used to be a lot cheaper, but it helps if you bring friends to share the costs.

airfare - $800 RT
suv /wk - $1000
license - $100

those are the biggest expenses ifn you bring your own camping gear and camp out...of course there is gas, groceries and BEER.

3rd weekend of june is usually when the run starts...gotta book your flights and vehicle now though.

costa rica is awesome too. I stayed a month down there in 2000. It was MUCH less americanized and cheaper than it is right now. I caught some monster fish down there though out of Quepos.

IF you are looking for Bluefin, they just showed up off of Southport, NC. YOU chances are actually pretty good. THey have had several 75 fish days in Morehead this year, but hte school moved south. IN two days of fishing, you have a fairly good chance of hooking one, that will sell for 6 or 7 k.

IN MY OPINION I'LL TAKE WADE FISHING FOR TROUT AND REDS ANYDAY BUT THE GREATEST FISHING TRIP OF MY LIFE WAS CAMPING OUT ON PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND IN THE ALASKA SOUTHERN ISLANDS FOR TWO MONTHS.PRINCE OF WALES IS JUST A 3 HOUR FERRY RIDE EAST OF KETCHIKAN.I CAUGHT EVERY TYPE OF SALMON,EXCEPT SOCKEYE IN THE DIFFERANT STREAMS AND PASSES AND THEN HIT THE OCEAN FOR KINGS AND HALIBUT.CANT WAIT TO GO BACK.FISHING FOR WATER WOLVES(NORTHERN PIKE) IN CANADA RUNS A CLOSE SECOND.

THEY DIDN'T HIT LURES ALL THAT WELL BUT TORE UP THE BIG SHINERS FREELINING ON BRAIDED LINE. THE NEXT DAY WE HIT THE OCEAN AND PICKED UP A MESS OF DORADOS AND HIT THE MANGROVES FOR SNOOK ON THE WAY BACK IN. GREAT COMBO TRIP.

BFail,

By examining your character after the past year, I would tell you where you need to go....but I don't know if fish can live in that boiling hot water..
