JP, I would personally recommend the Vagabond - Captain Mike Lackey - out of Point Loma sportfishing. He's very good at finding the albacore & bluefin!

Fall (Sep/Oct) would probably be best for a trip like that.

Look for a trip that is sponsored by Izorline.. Then, you can get your reels spooled for free and other goodies from them.

It's just an added bonus..

Pacific Queen definatelly has had its fair share of tuna blood on her decks. Keep us posted. Ive promised to visit my friends soon at one time or another. Keep you eyes on BLOODYDECKS.com... Careful, its not family safe, but they will have the most knowledge and the most upto date reports.

good one, from the threads on BD. and their cook is somewhat of a legend, according to some posts.
Seriously, Intrepid had some of the best Albie ##'s in the whole fleet this past season. I'm down for that.
I Only hope it can happen in the timeframe I'm out there.
Otherwise it's a bust for me

Depending upon dates, I would definately be in. I have been lookin at a 5 day around September.

Fishnwfins, an old member who now lives in CA, and I are going to do the 5 day in 2008. He is going to get on here shortly and offer up some information and suggestions. He is in the know down there.

Well, I just learned that he is creating a new login ID of Ronzfishntatts. He can offer more information and suggestions for success than I could ever dream of offering.

If we had enough people interested, perhaps all or some of us could drive out. It would be less expensive that way. Not so much for the travel, but definately on shipping the fish back home.

The 5-days are running around $1500, give or take a little depending upon the boat.

We were looking at the Intrepid, Red Rooster III, Excel, just to name a few. I don't think we could go wrong with any of the above.

We took a 2 day last July just for Albacore and had a great trip on the Outer Limits. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1435676/page/3#Post1435676

Lite-liner, my buddy seen your post over on BD and called me up.

Let's do this!

Thought I would jump in here and see if I can't offer up some info. It's great to see talk of putting together a San Diego trip.

The first thing that I would consider is what you would preferably want to target. That will help determine when you go and even which boats to consider.

If the albacore are what you are after then my suggestion would be to look at the month of July from the fourth to the end of the month. In good years like we had in 2007 it can last well into August and even September. Also if a July albacore trip is what you want then a five day may not be necessary. A two day is a great July albacore option, costs less and the boats can still be pretty nice. I like to book my two days out of Seaforth Landing mainly because they have lots of free parking and some great boats (Pacific Voyager, Outer Limits, Legend would be my top choices).

If a mixed bag is more what you are after then an August to October 5 day is the way to go. Usually the 5 day boats are more luxurious as they are the same ones that do the 10-21 day trips.

August you still have a shot at albacore, plus possibility of small bluefin, yellowfin, dorado and yellowtail. Usually you start in the albacore grounds, fish some floating kelp for dorado and yellowtail on the way to Cedros or Benitos for more (and bigger) yellowtail as well as possible halibut, calico bass, etc.

September into early October might get you to Guadalupe for yellowfin up to and sometimes over 100 pounds, if you can get them on the boat before the taxman (great white) steals it from you.

If you are looking for the cows (over 200) then you will have to consider a minimum of 10 days.

If you are looking into the five days most all of the long range boats are great. Some that would come highly recommended would be Red Rooster III, Shogun, Excel, American Angler, Independence and Royal Polaris. The Vagabond has already been named and is an older boat, but has and still does kill a lot of fish. The Intrepid is the newest boat in San Diego and had its first trip this past summer. It's pricey, but has had great reports about the operation.

Sorry for the long reply, there is a lot of information to consider. Heck, I didn't even go into how to rig up for these trips....

Sounds good to me J.P.

I vote for early September. Once we have a timeframe set, we can then narrow down the boats and dates.

Lite-Liner, the albies traditionally run from the fourth of July until August some time and possibly even into September like they did this past year. On a two day trip, if load up on your two day limits of albies (5 per day) on the first day, a lot of times the Capt. will go inside to fish yellows on day two. Yellows can also be found under the kelp paddies that time of year and the Capt. may stop and fish kelp as well. His first priority is usually the albacore and if it's a scratch bite you could spend both days trying for the tuna.

September and October could see more yellowtail and some yellowfin and dorado in the mix. Also early trips in June tend to be more yellowtail.

I highly recommend Seaforth Landing. Mainly because they have lots of free parking. The parking at the "big three" (Fisherman's Landing, H&M and Point Loma) can get pretty nasty. Also Seaforth has a restaurant and is a short walk away from Mario (Sportsman’s Seafood) for processing. Mario also has a restaurant with good wharf style seafood.

My personal favorite boats are the Pacific Voyager (Mark is a fishing machine and Jeff is an awesome chef), Outer Limits (great young Capt. and crew, they work hard) and the Legend (Shawn is very intense).

Let me know if I can offer up any more info.

Just letting you guys know that some of the better boats are filling up already.

If some of you are interested in doing this trip, we need to try to plan something in the near future.

I hope to have my deposit down on one within the next 30 days or so.

Well, Ronzfishntatts and I pulled the trigger on a 5 day trip on the Red Rooster III. http://www.redroosteriii.com

Trip #18, September 9/10 - 9/15, 2008.

The trip is sponsored by Izorline. Still several spots open if anyone is interested.
