What type of oil filter wrench do I need to remove the filter
from my son's 2004 Ford pickup truck....8 cylinder.

The dealership put a Motorcraft oil filter that will not allow me to grip it with the "band" type wrench. The edge of the filter has multiple indentations....very different than the Fram ph-2 filter that it calls for.

There is very little space to work...access is from the top and also from the bottom but does not allow a "good grip" with either hand.

Any help appreciated.

There's so many different types of oil filter removal tools. If the band type doesn't work due to space, you might want to get the type with jaws to grip the lower end of the filter and you could use a ratchet with extension.

Only thing Walmart had was the plier type with jaws, 3 sizes of
the "cap" wrench and the strap/band with flex handle.

The cap wrenches don't fit the multiple indentations of the Ford filter and there is no room to maneuver the other two types.

I will probably have to get a cap wrench from the Ford dealership. I can imagine what that will cost! For any 4.95 item, our Ford dealership gets 17.95....or 23.50.....or 27.95...

and the bad thing is....they know they have the only thing that works and just smile that GREAT big old smile when you say something like..........WTF!!!!!...

This is like the one I use.
I didn't buy it here, just did a search and cut and pasted one of the 1st links.

It will fit any size filter and get up into those hard to reach areas with a long enough extension.

Thanks Holzer, I would buy one of those if they were available in an auto store. I finally got the Ford wrench for 7 dollars and change at Auto Zone. There is just so little room in that oil filter space that you need an end cap or the type your pic shows.

Find you a cup type fitler wrench. Most tool trucks carry them. It takes a 3/8 or 1/2 inch extension and ratchet. I use these at work and they are great. I've had them so long, I cant remember what I paid for them.
