After having some work done on my 115 yamaha the other day, water pump, I took the boat out and found another problem. My jackplate is in the lowest setting and dosen't respond to the up/down switch. It was working the last time I used it which is seldom for lake fishing. Any ideas as to what might be up? I know there are a bunch of possibilities, but I can't even find the fuse to it that has to be, I guess, in the system. I know it needed to be lubricated and if the shop needed to lift it to work on it that it might have blown a fuse or breaker as a result of the dragging from no lube. Please help.

What brand? (guess CMC)
Is is dead? Or does the motor run without working? Does it try to go down but not up?

Dead both ways is a fuse
Dead one way is a solenoid
Motor runs no action is fluid.

Pat,
It is a CMC. I knew I was leaving out a lot of info. Sorry! It is dead. Dosen't make any noise when I activate the switch. I felt like it was a fuse but really didn't know where to look. There is a fuse panel up under the center console but didn't see one that was burned. Also have a panel that is hard wired back on the transom. I have tried to lube it, the jackplate, as best I could without being able to move it but need to find the fuse? Thank you for any help,
C.T.

Most of the CMC jackplates have a circuit breaker back at the battery. Check to see if it is tripped.

Does it make any noise at all when trying to go down? If it does it's probably the relay on the up direction.

No, no sound at all. Tried to find the breaker by the battery but it was getting dark and couldn't see much. Sure need to find it and fix the problem. Thanks for your help.

Clifford if you have a test light you can tell to what point you have voltage. Try from battery first then from up & down switch then from relays to motor. You might need some help (extra hands) to run the switches once you determin you have power that far. I have a CMC and have to carry a extra relay because its been such a problem. Let me know how it goes.

Used my test light at what I think is the breaker for the jackplate and it had power going into the breaker and none coming out. Couldn't find a reset switch. I am assuming it is the auto reset breaker and it is not resetting. I want to replace it with a manual reset breaker but have a question. What amp breaker should I put in? I have a 50 amp one that I have extra for the trolling motor but was afraid that it might be too much. Any info would be appreciated.

How big is the one in it now? I wouldn't go much over the factory breaker if any. There is a reason why that put it in there.

Clif, if you can find a power rating on the pump motor, you can calculate how much current it draws. If it is rated at 1000 watts (probably not), divide that by 12 volts and you have 84 amps. If not, the gauge of the wire will tell you also. In other words, 12 ga wire=20 amp brkr, 10 ga wire=30 amp brkr, 8 ga wire=40 amp brkr. You can get the info online.

Of course, Pat or Mike could probably just tell you...hehehe...that would be easier....

You can use either the 40 or 50 amp circuit breaker. It will not hurt anything to use the 50 amp.

I dug around in there today and when I cleaned off the old breaker it said 30 amps. But with some saying go with that and others suggesting even a 50 would be o.k. I still am not sure what to do. If you can't move the plate itself how can you lube it? I really feel that is why the breaker kicked in the first place. When I had it in the shop it was at it's usual height and when I took it to the lake the next day it was all the way down and dead. I have a 50 amp fuse right now that I could use but am afraid it might be too much. Tommy, have you used a 50amp breaker on a jackplate before? Thanks guys for posting and helping.

I believe we have seen some with a 50amp breaker on it. I would stay with a 30amp or go to a 40amp. If it trips a new breaker then you have something wrong electrically or mechanically ( binding ) causing the problem.

Will try to pick up a 30amp one tomorrow and install. I will let you know how it turns out. I need to figure out how to lube it so that it dosen't kick the breaker again.

Don't know if any of you guys that posted will ever look at this since it's on page 3 or 4 by now but fixed the jack plate problem. It was the old breaker. I went ahead and sprayed some Corrosion-x on the outside working parts of the JP, let it set a day, and replaced the breaker today. It is working fine and now have it at the level I always use up here in the lakes. Thanks for your help and hopefully the wind will lay so I can go fishing soon.
