JP, I would personally recommend the Vagabond - Captain Mike Lackey - out of Point Loma sportfishing. He's very good at finding the albacore & bluefin!
Fall (Sep/Oct) would probably be best for a trip like that.

Pacific Queen definatelly has had its fair share of tuna blood on her decks. Keep us posted. Ive promised to visit my friends soon at one time or another. Keep you eyes on BLOODYDECKS.com... Careful, its not family safe, but they will have the most knowledge and the most upto date reports.

good one, from the threads on BD. and their cook is somewhat of a legend, according to some posts. Seriously, Intrepid had some of the best Albie ##'s in the whole fleet this past season. I'm down for that. I Only hope it can happen in the timeframe I'm out there. Otherwise it's a bust for me -B

Depending upon dates, I would definately be in. I have been lookin at a 5 day around September. Fishnwfins, an old member who now lives in CA, and I are going to do the 5 day in 2008. He is going to get on here shortly and offer up some information and suggestions. He is in the know down there. Well, I just learned that he is creating a new login ID of Ronzfishntatts. He can offer more information and suggestions for success than I could ever dream of offering. If we had enough people interested, perhaps all or some of us could drive out. It would be less expensive that way. Not so much for the travel, but definately on shipping the fish back home. The 5-days are running around $1500, give or take a little depending upon the boat. We were looking at the Intrepid, Red Rooster III, Excel, just to name a few. I don't think we could go wrong with any of the above. We took a 2 day last July just for Albacore and had a great trip on the Outer Limits. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1435676/page/3#Post1435676Lite-liner, my buddy seen your post over on BD and called me up. Let's do this!

Thought I would jump in here and see if I can't offer up some info. It's great to see talk of putting together a San Diego trip.
The first thing that I would consider is what you would preferably want to target. That will help determine when you go and even which boats to consider.
If the albacore are what you are after then my suggestion would be to look at the month of July from the fourth to the end of the month. In good years like we had in 2007 it can last well into August and even September. Also if a July albacore trip is what you want then a five day may not be necessary. A two day is a great July albacore option, costs less and the boats can still be pretty nice. I like to book my two days out of Seaforth Landing mainly because they have lots of free parking and some great boats (Pacific Voyager, Outer Limits, Legend would be my top choices).
If a mixed bag is more what you are after then an August to October 5 day is the way to go. Usually the 5 day boats are more luxurious as they are the same ones that do the 10-21 day trips.
August you still have a shot at albacore, plus possibility of small bluefin, yellowfin, dorado and yellowtail. Usually you start in the albacore grounds, fish some floating kelp for dorado and yellowtail on the way to Cedros or Benitos for more (and bigger) yellowtail as well as possible halibut, calico bass, etc.
September into early October might get you to Guadalupe for yellowfin up to and sometimes over 100 pounds, if you can get them on the boat before the taxman (great white) steals it from you.
If you are looking for the cows (over 200) then you will have to consider a minimum of 10 days.
If you are looking into the five days most all of the long range boats are great. Some that would come highly recommended would be Red Rooster III, Shogun, Excel, American Angler, Independence and Royal Polaris. The Vagabond has already been named and is an older boat, but has and still does kill a lot of fish. The Intrepid is the newest boat in San Diego and had its first trip this past summer. It's pricey, but has had great reports about the operation.
Sorry for the long reply, there is a lot of information to consider. Heck, I didn't even go into how to rig up for these trips....

Sounds good to me J.P.
I vote for early September. Once we have a timeframe set, we can then narrow down the boats and dates.

Lite-Liner, the albies traditionally run from the fourth of July until August some time and possibly even into September like they did this past year. On a two day trip, if load up on your two day limits of albies (5 per day) on the first day, a lot of times the Capt. will go inside to fish yellows on day two. Yellows can also be found under the kelp paddies that time of year and the Capt. may stop and fish kelp as well. His first priority is usually the albacore and if it's a scratch bite you could spend both days trying for the tuna.
September and October could see more yellowtail and some yellowfin and dorado in the mix. Also early trips in June tend to be more yellowtail.
I highly recommend Seaforth Landing. Mainly because they have lots of free parking. The parking at the "big three" (Fisherman's Landing, H&M and Point Loma) can get pretty nasty. Also Seaforth has a restaurant and is a short walk away from Mario (Sportsman’s Seafood) for processing. Mario also has a restaurant with good wharf style seafood.
My personal favorite boats are the Pacific Voyager (Mark is a fishing machine and Jeff is an awesome chef), Outer Limits (great young Capt. and crew, they work hard) and the Legend (Shawn is very intense).
Let me know if I can offer up any more info.

Just letting you guys know that some of the better boats are filling up already.
If some of you are interested in doing this trip, we need to try to plan something in the near future.
I hope to have my deposit down on one within the next 30 days or so.

The Pacific Queen like the Pacific Voyager is typically a 1-3 day boat. The reason is the type of coast guard license that the boat has restricts them going out no further than a certain range....I believe that it is about 150 miles.

One question about the SD long range boats. Do they provide a place to clean your catch on return or do you have to take catch to a processor?

That really depends on the trip you go on. The 1 to 2 day trips will provide fish cleaning on the boat by the crew for small fee ($1 to $5 per fish depending on size). As for the long range boats (such as the Rooster) the cleaning is done dockside by processors where you can have your catch cleaned and vaccuum packed, trade for canned tuna, smoked, tuna jerky, etc. Processing fees range from straight trade for x number of pounds for x number of cans to $.75 a pound for filleting and $1.00 a pound for smoking or jerky. Some elect to take thier catch home whole and do it themselves...

How do you spell Sloooooooooooooooooooooow?
Just got off the Endeavor this morning on a 1.5 day trip out of Seaforth Landing in San Diego.
Albies were slow!
19 passengers with 1 albacore average. Two yft were also caught with a lot of bonito in the mix as well.
I hope it picks up. Most of the albacore were trolled caught. 15-20# average size.
Water was rough, fishing was tough with lots of wind. All the kelp paddies were not holding fish.

I bet those Albies will pop within the next week. Several boats are picking at them now and numbers are coming up. Ronz is heading out next week on a good boat. Hopefully they will be WFO by then. Any day....

Ronz,
For those that want to clean thier own fish is there a place at the landing to do it or do you have to take them elsewhere. I would want to clean my own fish and would not want to have to bring them back to Texas whole.

Phantom, you're best off having your catch cleaned, packed & shipped by Anthony's - I'd recommend having them ship on Southwest airlines cargo, as Southwest employees understand the concept of 'frozen'. I've used them in the past & it was easier than trying to get the fish checked as baggage on AA.

I guess that sorta leaves me out. I just can't justify having someone else clean my fish. I wouldn't be flying, I would drive from Abilene. I may try the SD boats sometime, but for now I think I will stay off the Tex/La coast. Thanks for the info.

Well I got back from a two day on the Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth Landing. We left the dock on Sunday 07/05 at approx. 10:30pm and got back at 9:00pm on Tues. 07/08. I've been spoiled on my last several albacore trips with WFO action. This trip was more typical albacore fishing. We had 19 anglers and ended up with 110 albacore (15 to 32 pounds), 1 bluefin (35 pounds) and 1 small yellowtail. I put six on the boat and farmed three, DOH!. I had one in the upper teens the rest were good 20 to 25 pounds. All bait fish, no troll fish for me. Seas were calm, weather was overcast, Captain (Mark), crew (Todd, Greg, Kyle)and the chef (Mr. Jeff) (yes chef and not a cook) were great. I have fished with them before and I was reminded once gain that they are the best I have had the pleasure of fishing with on a 2 day boat. I will try and put together a more detailed report and post a couple pics as well.

I'll be leaving on my trip to San Diego to go on my 5 day fishing trip on the American Angler. Right now there are Albecore, Yellowfin and some Bluefin on the outside. Hopefully I get a wack at the tuna and then head to Guadalupe, Cedros, and San Benito Islands for some quality Yellowtail fishing... Here is a link if you want to see the fishing condition on the trip...I leave San Diego on the Wed. the 13th and returning the 18th. Will take a lot of pictures and report when I get back.. http://www.americananglersportfishing.com/fishing_reports.htmHere are a couple of pictures of the boat...

Long Range out of San Diego is terrific! I would recommend the American Angler for a 5 day or longer trip. Sam & brian, owner captains, know how to fish and take care of their customers. They used to own the Pacific Queen before moving up to the AA a few years ago. Check out their website at http://www.americananglersportfishing.comStu

We just got in and are in the process of cleaning equipment. 26 anglers went offshore skippered by John Grabowski, to San Pablo Canyon, and to Guadalupe Island for a total of 681 fish kept. Yellow Fin up to 98 pounds, Yellowtail up to 40 pounds and several smaller Dorado and one nice Wahoo. We released a bunch of skipjack and smaller Yellow Fin and Yellowtail. Was a very rough 22 hour ride back to San Diego yesterday and last night with not much sleep at all. More details and pics to come in a couple days after some much needed rest. Capt. Grabowski labeled the trip as Phenominal for this time of year and it is the best trip of the year for all San Diego landings thus far. Simply amazing!!! Sharks, BIG Sharks!!!!

Good deal. Glad you made it back safe....That trip up-hill can be a bumpy one.....We are making plans for 2009!!!!
