my dad has a 2000 7.3L Powerstroke. it does have a Super Chip and a bigger pipe on it. when it is cold. and when he starts it in the morning after about 40-60 seconds the RPM's will raise.
why is it doing this?

Mine does the same and I have the no chip and the stock pipe. I just always assumed that it's the fast idle working to bring the engine up to temperature just like a gasoline engine would.

Completely normal, don't know why; however, ours has done it since day one it is a 2000 year model as well with 135,000 miles and going strong. Don't have the chip.....

It idles up to protect the motor. Something about the way they idle and oil or something. Someone with more knowledge can tell you the specifics but they all do it. My old 7.3 did and my 6.4 does too.

The ONLY thing I miss about the 7.3 is the fuel mileage...that is the only place the 7.3 will beat the 6.4, this thing is AWESOME. Except at the fuel pump

they idle themselve up due to low combustion chamber temps. once it sences the the correct ambient temp, she'll calm back down

He's right, it's the computer telling it tto do that. My 5.9 cummins would also idle up after a few min idling on real cold days for the same reason. The first time it did it, I thought it was posessed.

Jeff, the stock Dodges don't usually have that feature turned on but any dealer can do it. Mine has never done it. Its also not to heat the combustion chamber but to warm the motor up.
In temps below 20 or so I can leave mine at idle for 30 minutes and it barely reads on the temp scale. Not good so I just start driving SLOWLY as soon as the engine stabilizes. Usually within 5 seconds.

With common rail engines (03-04)they would idle themselvs up to
1000 rpms after a minute of so of idleing, but the air temp. has to be below 50 degrees. The 04.5's and later had the feature where you could use the cruise to idle them up at any time, but the dealer had to enable this feature.

Mine was an 04, It usually took about 3 or 4 min on real cold days(below 30 degrees) and it would idle up to 1000 till I hit the clutch or brake or till the combustion temp was high enough.

my dodge is an '01 and I have to start it, then immediately idle it up with the pedal or else it will die and WONT start... LOL... its something about manual timing, and no glow plugs -in the cummins motors. It'll still pull FishKiller aroundin circles... \:\)

Hmmmm
Thats a strange one, I've never herd of a Cummins acting like this.

What year model is it, have you been pluging it in at night?

I wonder if that grid heater is inop when you turn that key on, can you hear the relay click and your lights go dim in the mornings?

The timming advance is mechanical, I'm not real certian how it works, but I would think that instead of it not running, it would just run rought for a bit.

i can hear the relay, and see the lights dim. but if I dont jump on it, its like it loses its prime. and it has fuel pressure. it just floods itself out.... I think it has a chip, as it will run 20psi boost pressure.

Stock they will run 20 lbs. They are wastegated to allow up to 20 and my (slightly) modded truck was doing 37 lbs and now is down to 32. I think I may have an intercooler leak and haven't checked it yet. Timing and injectors.
If your grid heater wasn't working it would start out real rough and put out white smoke.

If you don't have a boost fooler and also have a chip, your truck will smoke....I have heard yours does. With a boost fooler you can allow the turbo to spool up more air. More air less smoke more go. An Hx35 in a manual transmission is efficient up to around 36 lbs of air. Anymore and you get as much heat as air and that won't help much. The automatic uses an Hy35 which spools quicker but can get hotter exhaust temps.
Ronnie, do you know what chip you have? There is one that programs your computer(superchips) but they don't work well on the Dodges. See if there is something plugged into your injector pump or the most common is plugged into an unused plug that is right above and near your starter motor.

PS-- I experimented with injectors and have set of Bosch 40 hp mild injectors. I also have a set of 100 hp Edge injectors laying around.

Ok, I have a 96' 7.3 stroker and mine has never idled at higher rpm's when it is cold as others have stated here. Is there a reason for that?
