Howdy All, n00b here! I've noticed sometimes fishing there's trout or reds hitting the top of the water and I never seem to be able to catch them. What should I look for in a topwater lure to snag these suckers?

Wooo wee, just replace the refreshwater hooks with saltwater ones and you have youself a great topwater.

Super spook or the top dog. Bone, and chrome/blue.

I do pretty good with chrome & black Spook jrs.

Any of the above or on windy days when the water is choppy I like a Hula Popper.

I picked up a couple of the Spook Jrs. at Academy over the weekend. I got one dark color and one light color. haven't had a chance to try them out, but I'll also look into the other one's mentioned (especially the Hula Popper with the wind we've had lately Thanks all!
