I walked back into Nails creek from CR 125 WMA and proceeded to catch six whitebass, eight blackbass, one catfish and one goo. All whitebass caught within sight of the trailway bridge where the lake backs up into the creek and the water is a little more stained then at the bridge on down CR 125. It's a short walk in from the WMA station to where I caught the fish. Nasty weather Friday but not what it's gonna be like on Saturday and that is why I had to go Friday I really didn't have to work too hard for the fish, just throw a roostertail or roadrunner and slow-roll it along near the bottom. The creek really needs to flood to get the run going good and I doubt the Yegua is fishing as well for whitebass yet. I guess the whitebass have not moved up any further then the trailway bridge on Nails and I noticed that the water changes color not too far above that point. The blackbass were in the clearer water above the trailway bridge hanging close to structure. I missed the three best bass but got a good look at two of them.. 2lbs tops. The whitebass were most likely early arriving males, and all but one came from the same spot along the bank. Almost everything was holding close to the bank and not necessarily where I would expect them to be holding. The photo is of the biggest whitebass of the day. In years past some hybrids show up early and the crappie are usually there in good numbers by late December as well. We need rain to raise the lake so they will release water from the dam and get the creeks flowing. The lake is at normal pool level and there is not much flow in any of the creeks to get the fish moving upstream especially the whitebass. County Road 125 Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Trail leading to the creek Somerville Trailway Bridge Second cast .. first fish best spot to fish best whitebass

To fish in that kind of weather means you are a die hard fisherman. Thanks for posting the pics. It does bring back memories.

We got a good rain Saturday early AM and the creeks are full and running That is really what we need to get the run rolling.. kinda sucks for this weekend but will be better later because of it!

White bass run already? Please say it isn't so. Tell em you were just kidding. I'm not ready for the Somerville creeks to get overrun by the masses, but I've got plenty of other fishing spots to go to when it does. I'm making plans for Friday, but haven't decided where yet. I'm wondering if there has been enough rain to muddy the creeks. I'll probably head over to the Colorado river. It's running so low that it looks more like a creek.

I guess one good thing about it, Nuemans is closed to car traffic, so if someone does go there, they'll have to walk in, and I know its a long walk to the good holes. I've seen people bring stringers and stringers of whites out of that place, but walking in and out with a stringer of fish, well, I like to catch-em, but eating -em, ain't worth it for me. Crappie's the only real " other " white meat. HA HA

I didn't keep any today because I forgot to bring ice and was concerned about spoiling so I don't know the condition of the eggs. The females were heavy but I wouldn't think any were ready this early. I did put the first three fish on the stringer but let them go shortly after this picture. Notice the water color, murky but not bad. The lake is about six inches high and they are releasing from the dam. Should be a good weekend to check out Somerville!

Are the gates open in Newman's bottom on CR125? If not, can I just park my car there and go walking to the creek? Thanks and gig'em!

Gate opens after the first of the year. Yes you can park and walk but it is a LONG walk there and back especially if your toting a stringer full of fish. A mountain bike makes it easier but I don't fish Newmans on weekends very often because it's so popular. Nails creek must be warmer or something because the whitebass seem to show up there first but the Yegua has considerably more fish in it when the run really gets going strong!

Thanks Hooklinesinker, I'd better get a bike though! Yep, I remember the last run, it was so crowded, and I guess you were the one that helped me out to find this great place. I guess Nails creek much be better instead. Thanks and have a nice Hollydays! Perhaps see you on those banks, hehehehehe.

Nails was slow today between WMA parking and bridge...a few whites were being taken here and there. Family and I then tried Irwin bridge just at sundown over on Yegua.. I tied into a good sized hybrid that sure was fun but otherwise again the bite was slow.
If there is much of any pattern yet, it's find moving water, spot some structure to break the water flow and work something chartreuse slowly throughout the area.

Fished Nails Creek this morning. Caught 4 White Bass using a white roostertail. All but one fish was caught within site of the Somerville Trail Bridge. HL&S, thanks for the great reports on this place.
