FYI - Bethany Lakes in Allen was stocked with trout 7 December. Was able to catch 4 yesterday afternoon and 5 today. All caught using fly gear.

A lot of fishermen using both conventional and flyfishing gear. Regardless, I am pretty happy since I have had more luck catching them flyfishing versus with PowerBait this year so far.

Pictures are posted in the link below. Good Luck!

That is great to hear. Fly and bubble works well.

I was not able to go today but did re-stock on lures. Posted pictures of the casting lures and fishing flies that were catching them this past week on the link below.

For the casting lures, the gold or copper color is key. For the fishing flies, gray and black colors seem to work for me.

I have been catching most of them in the middle of the pond but have caught a few around the "island" as well as the back area of the pond where it is shallow.

Good luck tomorrow. It was tough today with rain, cold, and Cormorants spooking them.

The trout were active; just light hits on the fly. Struck out today; however, my partner did manage to bring one in. Picture posted in the link below. Slightly larger than the others caught yesterday.

We were using 6 weight rods with 5 weight WF floating lines. My partner was using a tapered leader; I was using a "homemade furled" leader with a 2X tippet.

The leader I was using is not a true furled leader but seems to work like one - less wind knots and better fly turnover. A wise flyfisherman that I met by chance at Bethany earlier this year described how to make one. I gave it a shot and have been using them since.

fishin'84,
Thanks for the info. In the past I've had better luck along the bottom. Sounds like you're catching them on top. Are they up or down in the water column? If I can find a trout stamp I might just make it out there....uless the wife can come up with some honey doo's between now and then. \:\)

From TPWD:

"Trout anglers will need the $5 Freshwater Fishing Stamp, which is included in all freshwater license packages"

This states you are covered if you're holding a TX license.

Hey FLY I have been catching all mine out there on dries. It makes it a little more enjoyable seeing them come up after a fly. Bethany is to deep to be on the bottom, most fish seem to be in the top part of the water column. Probably a dry with a dropper nymph would be deadly out there. I would bring the lightest wt. rod you have, these trout are small. Just make sure you can cast out 25' or so. As soon as you see a little surface action, lay your fly in the area and you will get bit. Good luck.

Hee Hee Heee, I can see it now, double haulin' a four weight. Guess one of the eight weights would be like hunting gnats with a shotgun. \:\) I'm still gonna check on the trout stamp deal. Mine is a straight freshwater fishing license and not part of any "package." Probably just semantics, but I'm one of those anal types who checks the details so as not to have to pay a fine if the GW doesn't interpret the writing the same as we do. \:\)

Fly,
I have been catching them on top in the upper part of the water column.

I have a Resident Super Combo License, it includes a Fishing License with both a Freshwater and Saltwater Stamp endorsements.

The Trout Stamp went away about 2 years ago(I think) and was replaced with the Freshwater Fishing Stamp endorsement.

Have been checked by the Game Warden with no issues with the Super Combo. I do see "Freshwater" listed on my license's endorsements.

I called the Garland GW office. Asked them specifically if I needed a trout endorsement of any special nature to fish these community ponds for trout. Nope, you're good. I'm just not lucky that way. I'd get caught in some big "sting" designed to bust up fishers who don't read so good. hahahaha
Did make it out there about 3:15 p.m. til darkish. Those little boogers were active all over the place. I haven't chased them in a couple of years. I forgot how much fun it was to have a fish rise to a fly I tied. No size to 'em, but what a hoot.
Got lots of hits on a gray gnat, size 33. Fella next to me was doing well on bobber and fly. He also did well on a BLACK dry fly.
May just wander down there tomorrow p.m. Probably be wearing a camo floppy hat. If yer there say Howdy.

FYI - Fished this morning with no trout taken. Weather may have changed their pattern. Did not observe surface activity other than 1 trout jumping on the surface.

May try again tomorrow.

Tried again this afternoon. Struck out today but did see others catch a few. Surface activity picked up around 5PM, so the fish are still there.

FYI: A lot of Cormorants are in the area, so we may have a harder time catching them.

Things have slowed at Bethany. Saw three trout taken this afternoon; all were using bait. Not certain but it looked like they were using bread for bait/chum.

Looks like Waterloo Park in Denison is seeing activity. Waterloo was stocked this past weekend.

75 north to Crawford Rd turn right on Crawford, when it dead ends turn left, go a short distance and turn right (back onto Crawford) follow it to Waterloo Park Rd. Turn right to the park. Trout are in the small lake with the fountain in it. Fish are hanging close to the fountain.

Stopped by at lunch and observed several fishermen take trout on Chartreuse PowerBait and Corn. Tried using a Chartreuse Glo-Bug; did not get a hit. They are deeper, and they are being bothered by the Cormorants.

Checked out Bethany at lunch today. Several fishermen catching trout on PowerBait or with bread.

Others noted a flyfisherman was doing well earlier in the day using a bead head nymph.

Picture of the trout caught using bread posted on the link below.

Fished Bethany Lakes for trout this morning. Changed tactics from flyfishing to baitcasting. Fished about 2 hours and limited out with 5 trout. One went 10.5", another went 9", others were small stockers. All were caught using Corn fished on the bottom.

For the flyfishermen, FYI - When I cleaned the trout, their stomach contents were mainly Corn and a nymph-like "bug". Did note one Pink and one Chartreuse PowerBait nugget in one of the trout.

I posted pictures on the link below to include the nymph-like "bug". Not sure what it is but may be helpful for someone using flies.

Fished Bethany Lakes this morning. Cold with frost on the ground but no wind compared to yesterday.

Caught a limit of trout but it took several hours with a two hour period where nothing was biting. Four trout were 9" to 9.5", and one trout was about 8"(pictures posted in the link below).

For the flyfishermen, examined the stomach contents and noted that they were empty except for the Corn eaten when caught. Thoughts are they were not actively feeding yesterday.

PS: Fished yesterday but did not get a strike; too windy!

Observed several fishermen catching trout just as we arrived at around 5PM. However, one fisherman noted the action was slow all day.

Fished Bethany Lakes for Trout this evening using fly-fishing gear. No trout taken. Tried a Bead Head Hares Ear Nymph with a Dryfly on a dropper. No strikes but did see one Trout actively feeding on the surface.

Saw others fishing with minimal success; however, one fisherman did catch a Trout using Bread fished about two feet below a bobber.

Fished Bethany this morning with no luck. Went to Lake Lewisville Ecological Learning Area later in the afternoon.

Caught one 8" Trout, missed three others. Used Flyfishing gear and a Copper Super Duper. Tried a Brown Wooly Bugger with no luck; shifted to the Super Duper and started getting hits. A little tough tossing the lure with a flyrod; still was able to get some action. See picture in the link below.

Saw others limit out using Corn and PowerBait. However, it looked like Corn was the better bait to use.

Also, saw two fisherman with 16"+ Trout. Good to know there are bigger ones in the river.

Before leaving decided to fish along the rocks near the tailrace; caught several small Crappie on White Clouser Variant, and then hooked and lost a nice Hybrid. Broke my tippet; should have used heavier test then the one I was using for Trout.

FYI: Game Warden stopped by and checked bag limits and licenses.

Bethany Lakes slowed down. Shifted to looking for other areas. Tried Lake Lavon this morning. No luck at the Dam Tailrace. Did observe one Gaspergou caught on a live minnow. Else, no luck.

Went back to Allen to check on the Catfish at Celebration Park. Caught two using Corn. About 18" in size. Pictures in the Link below.

Also, what is the closest pond near the mesquite area that has been stocked, I know samuel farm will be stocked on feb 1st, when my vacation starts, yeah!!!, but just looking for some fly fun, I'm still new too it, but dont want to drag the boat out for some largemouth.
