FRAUD ALERT---Boat Trader online

I received an email that looked to be legit from Boat Trader (I have a boat listed there) saying that either they had a problem running my c/card for payment or I had changed my info. They had a link to a page to re-enter the info. The page looked very legitimate, right down to the copywrite notices and links at the bottom of the page. My fraud alert picked it up as a phishing scam. The email was from support@boattraderonline.com which isn't what they use for their contact info. Just an FYI for those who have or may later have a boat listed.

Thanks K.D. There was a scam Skeeter on there mis-priced so I emailed for the correct price. The boat was in "storage" on the east coast... I ran after the email!

Never ever click on a link in an email asking you to verify or update your info. If it is legit, they will not ask you to offer any info online. If they are asking you for info online, it is a phishing scam. I have seen them use bank home pages. They look exactly like em.

I had a few similar scammers approach me on Craiglist.Take this money and cash the check and give the rest to the truck driver or something. They would probably pick up my car and cancell the check.

If you sign up with a new internet provider like aol you may get an email asking for credit card info cause they lost the other or some such b. s. Another scam letter going around right now is the Nigerian Advanced Cash Scam. They want you to put up so much money in hopes of getting a multi million dollar deal. The last one I got on email was a notice that I had won some over seas lottery and that I had to send a couple of thousand dollars to cover taxes and claiming fees. It is all BS. Just remember if it sounds to good to be true it is.

Words to live by,
1) If it sounds to good to be true, it is.
2) A fool and his money are always parted - repeatedly.
3) Never let your own greed turn you into a sucker.
4) There's one born every minute.
5) In God we trust, all others pay cash.
Just use sound judgement in anything like that, don't reply or click on links claiming to be from AOL, your bank, the IRS etc. Always call the entity directly to confirm whether it's from them (99.9% of the time it isn't).
Remember that cashiers checks/money orders can be forged or have other fraud committed with them - by the time your bank knows the thing is no good, the person who gave it to you is gone and the bank takes the money from your account. Anytime someone wants to pay you by check/cashiers check/money order, tell them you're holding the merchandise until the thing actually clears at your bank.

I have just started deleting the email without opening. I was getting them from Ebay, PayPal, and several banks some of which I don't have an account.

Often if you move your cursor over the link in the email, the addres you are being directed to will show on the bottom of your browser. If it doesn't match the site sending you the email, it's a good idea not to click.
