Guys and Gals,

These questions were asked to me, "Can two 12VDC batteries be wired in parallel, and a third battery be added in series, resulting in 24VDC to a 24VDC troll motor?" With the ultimant goal of an additional 1/3 of power (stored energy to run TM with) versus just two batteries in series. "Can it be done?"

I would say it could be done, and yes it will increase power availible. But I would also think all three should be identical batteries.

I'd hate for him to find out the hard way...it want WORK!

I thought this would be a great place to get many views on the matter. What do you all TFFers think?

I don't think that is practical! Yes it can be done, BUT when the single battery gets discharged a bit and can't keep up with the current demand, you'll not realize any significant gain from the remaining two in parallel.

My $.02

I agree that it can be done and it won't help a bit. 2 good batteries with lots of reserve amps will handle most 24v trolling motors all day. I think all that would happen is the addition of extra nonessential weight.

That is debatable...I would think "identical" batteries would depleat at the same rate.

If I'm not mistaken, the reason for not replacing all batteries in a flash light at the same time, causes the stronger battery to attemp to charge the weaker battery, in which those type batteries are not recommended for recharge. Or if they were todays "rechargable" batteries, they would simply equalize, then discharge at an equal rate.

The problem is that your parallel batteries will only be as strong as the weakest battery. Also when 1 battery is fully charged an automatic charger will shut off. Ypu will need to manually charge them. Not all batteries are equal. If your dealer will allow it, try testing them new & you'll see a difference.

i think, when the single battery runs low you could squeeze out some additional run time by taking it out of the circuit & putting the other two in series...but I'm betting "the hard way" is the only way to find out...or do some garage experiments...don't forget to report your results

why not add a fourth? 2 sets of parallel batts in series

Get KVD book or books. He discusses using more than a set of batteries for his setup with a 24V system.
