Amistad or Fork?

A buddy and myself take a two day trip each march. The first day we go with a guide and the next on our own. Last year we went to Amistad and had a great time. The only problem was the traffic on the lake due to the BASS tourney that was going on at the same time.
My question is this: Should we go back to Amistad or should we head north and go to Fork? Or is there some other lake that we should hit to find that hawg that I've been dreaming about?
Keep in mind that we will be there around the middle of March. Also, if you have any guide recomendations, let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Fork is a lake every bass fisherman should try. I live an hour away and probably would go to amistad just to say I had. I know fishings good thier, but until they pull more top 50 bass out than fork, I choose fork. Although it has been beatin up by fisherman the last few years. Thank Bob Sealy and bbig bass splah for that.

Try Fork this year...both are great fisheries...you might have better luck with numbers at Amistad though...

For me, Fork always produces quality bass. Even during less successful trips, I always catch a few great bass. I drive about three hours to get there, but it's always worth the trip for me.

Amistad. Just check the tournament schedule before you go and plan around them. My next adventure will be to Falcon or Choke. There's just something about these west and south Texas lakes. Maybe it's the settings, don't know for sure. My uncle's farm was partially covered when fork filled and he kinda got the shaft from it, maybe I have a little antipathy toward the impoundment.

If you didn't like the crowds at Amistad, you will hate Fork. I doubt there is a more crowded lake in the country than Fork in March. Fork can be good, but the crowds do get old. You should consider Choke. There are good numbers of big fish in that lake. The gators are cool too. I didn't like Falcon because of the accommodations. If I go back there, I will just camp at the state park.

I agree with DYOLLP about the crowds at Fork. I live about 2hrs. away, but won't go there because of the crowds. I would go to Amistad with Amistad Man,or find a guide at Falcon and go there.

we went with Amistad Man last year and had a good time. Like I said, it was just frustrating with the tourney going on at the same time.
I saw that the Elite series is headed to Falcon as well this year. But both of those tourneys are in April so they shouldn't be a problem.
Which lake gives me the best chance of catching a wall hanger? I know Fork has more big ones come out of it, but with so much traffic is Falcon or Amistad better?

Anywhere but Fork. I will say it again. I hate that lake. Sure go on out, bounce of stumps, idle 2 miles to get to the boat lane, catch a bunch of 10 inchers, if you catch anything at all. Catch the bass of a lifetime? Sure if you had dynamite. I will probably never go back to Fork. Just my 2 cents.

they are all great lakes, it comes down to personal preference and what you really want out of a trip. its hard to beat falcon for sheer numbers and the chance to catch a giant. if it was me, id be headed to falcon in march. its a really big lake and difficult to sight fish with the stained water. fork in march is simply loaded with sight fisherman. dont get me wrong, i love fork, just not in march. falcon will have fewer people on it. not many lakes like falcon where u can catch 5 fish stringers of 30-40lbs on atleast 3 different patterns of your choice. it is a flippers paradise, awesome spinnerbait fishing, and u can crank all day if you want. contact charlie haralson, a great guide on falcon that can give u the low down on march. 956.744.6235

I have fished both lakes and i have to say that they both have their perks, I just simply dont understand how so many people on here would rather settle for less and not get a shot at a fish of a lifetime simply because the lake has more trafic than ususal. As far as im concerned if im at a lake in march and it isnt crowded then i probably need to change lakes. fork is simply an unbelivable place to be in march.. and even at its most crowded amistad still has plenty of places to fish were you probably wont se another boater all day. i am lucky enough to live very close to another unbelivabe spring time lake. Alanhery is were i will be searching the banks this spring....and then ill proably head to fork..lol

Don't sell Fork short,it has nice fish, but my friend there is no comparasion to Amisted when considering the vastness of areas to fish.I also was down at Amisted last year, however I and my Son arrived there to see the final weighin and fish all the next week.We caught the fish bedding, and I mean the big ones,I am 65 been fishing from age 5 believe me this was the ultimant fishing trip. Both in numbers and size, going back for the entire month of March in 08.(Good LORD willing)Bless all out TROOPS and bring them home safely.

Out of about five trips, I have had two trips with 10 or more fish over 5lbs. I have also had a couple of slow days also, but they were days when the weather didn't cooperate and we didn't really expect much. I have never been to Armistad, so I can't say, but Fork is a special lake.

The potential at Lake Fork is what brings the people . No matter how crowded just think how much room 1 giant fish takes up. Thats all the room you need to drop that lure in front of HER and set the hook . Fork every time.

There is no comparison. Falcon is the best unrealized lake in the US right now. After BASS & FLW hit it this spring the word will get out. Not sure why the accomodations were a problem (in one post)but they have some new Hotels (Holiday Inn) in town that seemed pretty nice (but pricey). I have been to Fork, Amistad, and Falcon and Falcon definately rules! Fork is slow recovering from LMBV. Choke Canyon is another sleeper lake that many south texas anglers have been keeping secret from us but word is slowly getting out. (Gotta keep an eye on those south guys, hogging all the good lakes. LOL) If you do go to Falcon take the biggest and heaviest rods and Braid you can get. You will need it!!!! Also the food at Falcon is wonderful and inexpensive. Also check out the reports for Falcon last year during the time you are interested in going: http://www.tackleandrods.com/lake/flash.htmWe went during October for the Bass Champs regional and it was the best fishing I have EVER had.

Fork in March is a mad house. So many people... My honest opinion (doesn't mean much but I will run my head) Weather is unstable most years in March...so if you come to sight fish just be prepared to have a back up. You CAN get away from the traffic if you do some homework. (playing leapfrog with 60 boats in glade always makes for a fun fishing trip) If your looking for a guide that is a fulltimer and not a part timer making a boat payment you may be out of luck. Lots of the guides have been turning trips down for spring for a while. Slow to recover from LMBV? I don't know, maybe? Fishing has just changed and the lake has aged. Best way I can describe it is seeing ex guides and old customers that have fished the lake the same way since the mid/late 80's and talk about how dead the lake is...then people that were never here during the rat race clean house. Some people just can't get away from old habits. Fork does NOT have the numbers it used to, no one can debate that...but the 13lb+ are still being caught like clockwork. (Where you at Alan Henry?) hehe Most of the locals and guides agree this is likely going to be a banner year for Fork with the first somewhat stable water levels in a while. Had a hell of a spawn this last spring, so that is a plus for the future. Castman, your just paranoid...sandbass taste good. Hell Amistad has great fishing with stripers Do you ever sit in bed and have night sweats thinking about that big bad pipeline thats going to drop the lake level 30 feet when they fill it? lol Fishing this year has been really really weird, lake is running way behind from what it was last year...confuses me to no end. I had a really good year when the lake was low, but those same spots that I was murdering unders on hold lots of 2-3lb channel cat now. I got fed up right around the McDonalds tournament and haven't really got back in the groove. Amistad is an awesome lake, I thought the lake and country side was ugly but it was a blast! I didn' see or hear of any monsters, but the weather wasn't all that great and traffic wasn't heavy. I will go back to Amistad and I live all of 200 yards from Fork.

I personally will be fishing every lake mentioned in this post. This spring, I will be at Fork a ton, Falcon, Amistad, Choke Canyon, and probably Alan Henry (even though last year was terrible out there). No reason to limit myself to one lake when they are all so great.
