Don't try to buy a kit for salt water that also "lets you tie trout flies." No such thing.

The best looking kit from my experience is Bass Pro's Saltwater kit. It has a video with Lefty Kreh explaining tying. The materials in the kit are of a decent quality. Many people will tell you not to buy a kit, but, if you do, try this one. Or at least consider it. Most kits have inferior materials.

For trout flies, add materials to your collection as you go. No trout fly kit I've ever seen has quality materials in it.

Listen to what Dave is telling you. I cannot speak about a saltwater kits but I have never I mean never seen a freshwater fly tying kit that was worth spending money on. A good flyshop can custom build a kit for you with quality materials but avoid prepackaged kits as they are full of [censored] that you will never use. If you have not done so, take a fly tying class this will save you lots of $$ in the long run.

I just got into tying within the last few weeks. I completed a trade online for some fly tying material, a few tools, and a vise. The vise was a starter vise and although it worked well I didn't really like it. I went to eBay and bought a Danvise for $62. It's an awesome little vise and fully adjustable and rotates. I have tied a dozen or so flies on it and it works great.

vhs07,
Some quick questions. What type of fly fishing do you do most often? Have you ever tied before? How much do you want to spend?
Bass Pro Shop has seperate tying kits for trout, bass, jigs and saltwater flies. Each kit is $49.99 and contains most of the basic tying tools. Granted, the materials are not tip top of the line, but the kits are designed for beginners who want to see if fly tying is their cup-o-mud. You cam move up in quality whenever you want or just add more goodies as you go. The Lefty Kreh videos are pretty good.

Here are my thoughts - buy a toolkit, a decent toolkit and then select one pattern that you want to fish right now. Get those supplies, tie that pattern for a few packs of hooks. Then branch out.

Instead of dropping a huge wad of cash on a big inventory of materials you can build as you go. Believe me, in short order you'll have bags and boxes all over the house. At least that is what one guy told me....

I understand the boredom thing!
Set your vise up in front of the monitor, fire up a video and follow along tying. That's how I learned a lot of my basics, in front of the monitor following online patterns. But this was back in the ancient, pre-YouTube days of the Internet.

ouch yeah, Victoria, I failed to keep that in mind when I posted.
Hang in there and post some pictures of flies and fish caught on.

How's the fishing down south?

Two other great starter patterns for salt water tyers are Clouser minnows and Cypert mylar minnows. They are simple to tie, can be tied in lots of sizes and colors, and work well on most saltwater fish.
