Hi everyone,

We have a corporate retreat in two weeks in Galveston, and will be staying in a house on the beach in the Gulf Palms area. I've never done any salt water fly fishing in Texas -- plenty in Florida, and Long Island (New York) -- but am certainly going to take advantage of the opportunity. I'm hoping some of you guys know the area and have some advice. I like light tackle, and so am thinking about bringing a six weight and an eight weight -- does that make sense? Is this area near the house any good? I'm planning to wade -- do I need to worry about rays, leggings, or anything special?

And, of course, what about flies? The usual compliment of Clousers, Deceivers, poppers and weighted eye stuff? Is there a good fly shop in the area?

Sorry for so many questions. And thanks in advance!

you should be fine with your 6 and 8 wt with clouser, deceivers and crazy charlies. Other than that I am not sure

Thanks! I always figure you can't go wrong with those!

Ps: >>Unclogging toilets is considered fishing, right?<< It's only FLY fishing if you use a bamboo plunger!

I found this lineup of shops and clubs in that area.

Graphite, huh? me too, of course ...

One of my all time favorite John Geirach lines is where he sums up a "bamboo vs. graphite" piece by saying "Of course, the true cranks are the ones who stuck with fiberglass ..."

Which reminds me: I have a fiberglass 3-weight blank around here somewhere. Not much use for a soft three here in Texas, so never got around to building it.

Thanks for the link!

Thanks, guy.

Yeah, I did the Google thing, too, and everything was in Houston. I know there's an Orvis there, too. I was hoping someone from the area might know of a tackle shop with a fly department -- sometimes those don't come up in a fly shop search -- but so far, da nada.

Worst comes to worst I'll hit some of the Houston shops on my way down from Dallas. Or just go wading and see what happens -- sometimes, ya just gotta figure it out yourself ...

Don't know why I didn't think of this earlier. An online version of Flyfishing the Texas Flats by Chuck Scates and Phil Shook.
It's here and if you are prompted to register it's free.
