I was the mean kid - I used to pinch off the abdomen because then it would glow constant for a few minutes.

I have seen a few around the house the past few years, but not like when we were kids, they were everywhere in the spring

Townsend, TN there is a area in June, up in the Smokey Mountains that is a breeding area for them. It is a mazing to see so many of them. And they all get in sinch with one another. This goes on for several weeks.

Riley and I rented a cabin in Townsend. Beautiful quaint town.

I really enjoy seeing them.. usually see them in the summer time at my place.. never a lot of them here but will see a few every evening just before dark.. I don’t know if there is anything to it scientifically, but when I see them flying high, near the tops of pine trees, I swear the approaching system from the gulf is going to be a big one… have seen it too many times to the point I’m looking for them high in the sky… where I’ve never seen them unless rain was headed this way.

No sooner than I make a thread about them...

Thought I'd try to get the place mowed before the rains that are coming and was getting started in the back pasture when I saw my first one in a long while. Started making the long passes and the whole back yard started lighting up. Finished off one small section and left the rest. Put the tractor away and just watched the show. Good news is, there was probably around 40-ish that I saw, so hope they have a thriving breeding season and start coming back.

Oh, and this dude. I thought the barn cats or coyotes had finished them off too. Hadn't seen them in 2 years.
