At some point in my life, I read an article somewhere that when you are going fishing and you see & smell smushed skunks on the road, the fish will be biting. Well, I saw & smelled 2 of them on the road today & had high hopes. Got to the lake just b4 sunrise & was one of 4 boats in Oak Thicket parking lot. It did fill up quite a bit later when the late sleepers arrived. Fished from 7:30 until 2:30...6 hours was dedicated to chasing bass & 1 hour was wasted time looking for some sunfish...tried 3 spots on the dam & 2 areas at the intake without a bite. The water Temp was 57 - 58 degrees. Light west winds made for a pretty comfortable day on the water. Ended up with 33 bass...no bigs, but several were between 3 & 4 pounds. I think once the water temp gets in the mid 60s for a week or so, the big girls will be moving in...at least I hope that's the case...

Solid post and fish as always Steve. Good job. thumb

Side Note: I was always told that when you see cows feeding the fish are biting and if the cows are laying the fish are not biting. I have caught fish while the cows were both feeding and laying. I have also caught caught and not caught fish after smelling a dead skunk. confused 3

Thank Jamie & Chuck...I have also heard that the fish bite better when the mesquite trees start to come out in the spring...and when the scissortails return from their winter retreat in Mexico. bs

Thanks Doc

Leo...I tried different depths...Along the dam I fished at the base of the rocks where it is about 10-15 feet deep. At the intake area I tried the deepest part of the channel where it is around 20 feet deep all the way up to the rocks where it is 4-5 feet deep. I don't ever think I have caught a single sunfish when the water temp is in the 50s on that lake. Last year I had some fair success in those same spots in January, but the water temp was 65-68 degrees. Pretty sure I saw Zane out there...hope he had better luck & found some...

Yesenia...not sure what's up, but I saw & smelled 2 more dead skunks on the road today...these were near Seguin. Maybe it's mating season & they are not paying attention to what's going on around them ? It did make me wish I was on the lake walking
