The results of using the wrong transom saver. These little short what they call transom saver don't support anything but the tilt cylinder. This is a 2007 Yamaha 250 that was using one of those pos transom savers and it has wore out the Swivel Tube Bushings, Tilt Tube Bushings, Upper and Lower engine Mounts plus the Down Housing socket where the Engine Mounts go. The Down Housing needs replacing but back order. This is going to be a expensive fix that could have been prevented if using one of those long Transom savers that goes from the motor down the trailer. I get these in all the time that the motor is loose as a goose and it will have one of those junk short transom savers on it.

16 year old motor, I'm betting it had more to do from not greasing those fittings regularly over the years then the transom saver.

I lost my swivel bearings and I blame it on using a small transom saver (I don’t remember the brand name right now). I believe it’s mostly my fault though, making sure it’s trimmed down nice and tight, don’t want the motor to move. bang

But I also think that the trailer attached transom savers are worthless. There’s no way that running a boat on plane isn’t harder on a transom, than anything else could be.

If this is true, why does Yamaha supply the short trim saver with their new motors?

Job security for future repairs? But then, you just said “trim saver” and not transom saver.

Skeeters don’t need their transoms “saved”. The transom on a skeeter can support the entire weight of the boat.

Somewhere, sometime back on a forum in the universe, a smart boat man said…the only important time to use a transom saver, is when your boats sitting on the trailer for a length of time. Motor down, with a saver to the trailer, it helps to take some of the strain off the transom. I don’t quite know how to test that theory, but it works in my head.

try this, put your outboard in it's towed position with no transom saver and pull it a bit, watch it bounce. the short savers do not take out the leverage against the transom, the bouncing is a whole lot different than running wfo on the lake.
you can also just put it in the towed position with the short saver and see if you can bounce the outboard, look at the leverage it has against the transom.

I have always used the long savers, on rear roller, trimmed down tight into the saver and it can't move at all.

Some of you missed the point. Yes its called a transom saver but most boats have super strong transoms and don't need support, but your motor does. Look real close with a open mind and you can see the short mount protects nothing but the trim and tilt cylinders. Shake the motor and look at what all moves, then put a long one on and notice the difference.

The bushings were full of grease when taken out. Yamaha uses plastic bushings which were terrable anyway. I have changed these bushings and engine mounts on several motors and all were using the short mount. When i get a boat in here for service that has the long mount most everything is still tight.

Do you have any pictures of those short mounts you are talking about, just curious.

I'm an old man and have always used the long transom saver from the trailer and never had a problem so I just see no reason to change something that works. Personally I don't know if the new fangled type works or not but I just don't see paying triple the price for it when I know the old style does...
