I was looking at Superduties today and the base engine was a 6.8l v10? Did I step in a time warp???? The specs look like the old engine.

It’s a V8 not a V10. It’s a smaller version of the 7.3 that came out 3 years ago and is replacing the 6.2 gasser

Got it. Thanks! I guess I was paying so much attention to the 7.3l, I failed to notice they added a new engine.

I haven’t seen a single real person review on the 6.8 yet. I was going to get one, if they would have come out sooner, finally had to look at other brands of trucks. Baffles me that GM and Dodge can make enough trucks to get to the lots and ford can only seem to get 1/2 tons there. Only SD you can get around here are the lowest package work trucks.

I saw that too, when I was looking. And then there was one dealer that had some but they were $8k over MSRP.

I bought a 2023 Chevrolet 2500 CCLB with the 6.6L gas motor, done with the diesel maintenance.

The 2023 Super Duties are just now hitting the lots. Don't know if the 6.8 is offered in the initial run though.

Back when I was trying to build one online, it wasn’t an option. Has anyone seen the 2023 SD in person? I’m curious how they look, they sure do have some GM influence in their design.

Just online but have the 6.8l listed. I'd look on the lot if they had anything worth looking at. I can't believe I am saying it, but I may start looking at Chevy's.

I saw one this past weekend. Completely redesigned but if you're not specifically looking it almost passed for a previous model. New grill is so-so, cutout steps on side of bed stolen from GM. Peeked in the window and the new center screen looked good but rest of interior isn't too far a departure from previous model as well.

Lol, I swore I’d never buy another one and then when it was the only long bed gas motor that I could find, I had to change my mind. It’s actually peppier than I expected on the low end, kind of weak when getting on the interstate though.

What transmission are they running in the HD gas trucks grout? Is it the 10 speed or a 6?

Yep, they went to a 10 and I went with the 6. I watched a video and the guy said, “if it’s your daily driver, go with the 6 speed”. Unlike Ford, which skips gears (when not in tow mode), the GM runs through all 10 gears and guys have said that it feels slower. Not much fuel economy difference either. I plan on keeping this thing for eons, so I didn’t want to deal with potential first year issues. They did say that the 10 would be the better tower though.

Might be slick in the diesels, I’ll pass in the gas version. Hated the 10 speed in my half ton and I’m fine with the 6, it’s tried and true. If I had more open roads, I might have wanted it, but I drive 80% city roads.

And the Ford Superduty 10 speeds are having quite a few issues, read about complaints on them often. Jerky, clunky, hammering shifts. No thanks.

Seems like an eight speed would be a smarter choice for Ford. I think Dodge was going to an eight, if I remember correctly.

Dodge is using a zf made 8 speed in several applications it’s a very nice transmission. I’ve read about the clunky shifts on the fords, none I’ve been in did.

I know they are different in the super duties, but in my half ton, it was bi-polar. Sometimes it was smooth as butter and sometimes it was all over the place. I never could pattern it, it was sporadic. I sure did like the fuel mileage in that thing though, it was awesome.

The 2 least problematic trucks that I’ve owned, my 2012 F350 6.7 and my 2018 F150 2.7L. I’m sure hoping the Chevy will be my best ever.

I know we got off topic of the 6.8, but has anyone seen any fuel mileage numbers on them? They were predicting 15 ish in one article that I had read.

I’m sure it’s very capable of 15 mpg but no way you are going to get even close to it with 80% town driving and a load in the bed etc.

I have the 10 speed in my 2017 F150 3.5L Ecoboost and it has been great but I can not imagine going thru all 10 gears all of the time! Interesting that GM chose to set it up that way, that tranny was built jointly by Ford and GM....

From my experience in the ten speeds you don’t know what gear it’s in unless you watch the tach.

I've driven quite a few F-250's with the 10 speed trans back to several different DFW auction houses for arbitration due to 10 speed trans failure. eek

I wonder what the deal is with them to have hit and miss failures like that, everyone I know that has one praises it.

There was a guy on BBC a few years back, (before the 10 speed Super Duty’s came out) and this guy was saying that he worked for the company that was building the 10 speed for the SD and they were seeing a huge failure rate. He didn’t think they’d even release the transmission and warned people of buying one. My 1/2 ten speed was 99% of the time great, it just had a few times that it was goofy.

As for the GM 10 speed in the gassers, most of the guys like them, just a few that said they preferred the 6.

Hey TMD, how are you liking your new GMC compared to your last couple of Fords?

Just rolled over 6k miles already and liking it more and more. If I had one grip it would be the gas tank. 24 gallons to is just too small specially when towing.

Picked up a 2023 STX FX4 6.8l w/ 10 speed tranny and so far, I'm impressed. Better economy than the 6.2l off the lot. I tow the travel trailer tomorrow but seems to have gobs of low rpm power. Think I'm going to like it.

Got 15.3mpg bringing mine home at 78mph. And rarely shifted out of 10th gear on hills. Stout, is all I can say.

Did I mention 3800 lbs of payload??? Impressive.

Towed great. Got 8.1mpg coming home (68-69mph). Rarely hit 7mpg with the 6.2l.

edit: so this makes more sense, I should clarify that I bought it in Austin, stayed over in San Angelo and towed the trailer from there.

Well, its pretty good on the highway and good towing but abysmal in stop and go traffic. It really seems to suck a lot of fuel at idle. Wouldn't buy one for a grocery getter.

I’d be very impressed with 15.3 real world mpg (not computer bs) at 80 ish miles an hour over a tank. Wind is huge, best whole tank mileage in my ecodiesel was 32.5 with the cruise on 75 mph with a tail wind pushing 25-30. It won’t touch 28 at 75 without the tail wind.

Does it have start stop [censored] or any kind of active fuel management?
If don’t mind how much? Was thinking about a new one.
Don’t need a super duty but ain’t buying anything with bs mentioned above

No active fuel management. Sucks fuel like crazy at idle but been getting over 14mpg with mixed driving (1-2mpg better than the 6.2l)

It was a $60k sticker with a $5k discount at Maxwell in Austin. Has a large display, 360 view cameras, led lights, spray in liner, additional bed lights. Nice truck. And I love the side steps on the bed of the 23's.

HD trucks aren’t epa rated and don’t fall under CAFE standards so the big 3 don’t put any of that [censored] on them

Ram puts the cylinder deactivation on their gas heavy duty trucks and it causes problems.
