Sorry to have been off the board for the past month, I have been painfully busy opening a new location in Paris. However, I had a video I wanted to share.

I had the opportunity to take my son offshore fishing out of Galveston with my cousin, Ted Farmer. Luke, my son, ended up in the biggest battle of his young life! I never dreamed he would have ever wrestled this monstor to the boat, but he did it somehow!

We left one morning, and ran 145 miles out of Galveston to a floater called "BoomVang". It was an incredible experience. We fished most of the night and the next morning. As you can see, the weather conditions were incredible and the water, well, it was actually as blue as it looks in the video. Check it out, I hope you enjoy!

Just go the the address below, and click on the video called "TexMex Outdoors BoomVang Offshore Trip". I would recommend you pause it right after it starts, and give it a minute to load up so it doesnt pause and restart.

Brett, that was incredible, my girlfriend watched with me & she 'awe-inspiring'.

Tell that kid of yours that I've not caught a YFT that big in my entire life - my biggest was only 80 or so - so he should be very proud of getting that fish in himself!

If you don't mind me asking, how do you get the yellowfin to come up on the daylight bite? Trolling, downrigging, chunking? I ask because the partyboats only fish the deep rigs at night & they always tell me that tuna run down deep in the daytime ... any thoughts you're willing to share on this? Thanks

Zac

Dude that was amazing!! It sent chills down my spine because I can't wait to experience that for myself (plus I haven't heard those songs from Creed in a long time). I'm guessing the outfitter made the video for you?

Man that video was awesome. It too sent chills down my spine. To see that boy take on that fish was something. Most kids would have given up after a few minutes. Good job.

I am glad ya'll enjoyed the video! I actually made the video myself. I co-hosted a show last year, BassnMexico, and when we decided to sit out this year I decided to get a good camcorder and the software and start playing around with it. THis is about the fourth or fifth video I have made. If you go to the link above you can see some of the other ones as well. I really enjoy making the videos, although it is time consuming. I take groups down to my lodge in Mexico several times a year, so I am going to start doing a video for them as an added service.

As far as Yellowfin during the day, you can absolutely catch them during the day. Go sit out on the Midnight Lump off Venice in January and February and see it for yourself. It is a little easier to catch them at night though, which is why the big boats like to night fish. The fish in the video hit a big live hardtail that we were drifting behind the boat, the other Yellowfin ate a big topwater early the next morning. We had several others on during the night, but none hit the deck. Something I have started doing is taking a flying fish lure and just drifting it out behind the boat, like a big topwater. They will crush it, but I am having trouble gettting them hooked up on it.

Another highly effective tactic for taking Yellowfin during the day is to chum. Cut up some bait into small chunks, about an inch in diameter, and toss two or three over every 30 seconds. Then take a hook with no weight and at least 60 pound flourocarbon leader, and drift it out behind the boat in the chum. The Yellowfin will eat their way through them chum, and hopefully take your bait. Make sure to hide the hook in the bait best you can.

Hope that helps a little.

Oh, I failed to mention that I was with my cousins, Ted and Jason Farmer. They are from Galveston. Ted just finished outrigging that boat, it made that 145 mile run very easy. Especially going out, as you can see we had dead slick water all the way out to BoomVang.

Thanks for the advice Brett - I've got my eyes on a leftover Glacier Bay 26' CC (leftover 2006 inventory marked down to $76,000) and my only reason for that boat is to chase yellowfin.

Makes the purchase decision easier knowing I can chase them day or night :-)

Oh man Zeek don't put the pressure on me, I don't want to be the one that pushes you over the edge on a $76K boat acquisition! Although, I would sure jump in and help you enjoy it! Be aware, though, that in Texas you gotta go WAY WAY OUT to find Yellowfin. Now if you pull it down to Venice, thats a different story, but you still have a 28 mile run to the jettys plus another 12-50 miles more even there, depending on whether.

Brett, I really don't need much pushing on the boat ... just need to get a few more house sales done first so I can, for the first time in my life, say those magic words at the dealership:

"Do you take ... cash?"

Finally got a map that shows the approximate location of Boomvang & yeah, I see its a nice run out there - about 140 miles from anywhere. Just means I'd have to cruise at about 17-20 kts to conserve fuel & plan to spend a day & a half or so. Also got a map for Lousiana coast & saw the details on the canyon area, with the various humps. Do you happen to know which hump is the 'midnight lump'?

The lump is SSW of the jetty at Southwest Pass around 18 miles I think. I should jump out at ya on the charts, it is a large area.

That was a pretty idiotic post

The video was good. I don't care for creed either, but there is a way to turn the sound down. The music aside, it's a very impressive accomplishment for a 10 year old and if you truly turned it off because of the music, you should watch it again on mute because it is pretty neat.

Great report and a big congrats to your son!

On the flying fish lure, we came up with a stinger-hook upgrade that helps in hook ups.

Use a 4x 4/0 Owner stinger (or another circle) attached to a 100# piece of mono that runs out thru the bottom of the tail (crimped of course).

Again, congrats to your son, and also to you for making him a part of your crew!!!

I've got a pic of it that I'll try to post.

Sir that was amazing. Your son should be very proud. And you should be very proud for getting your children involved in fishing. I am hoping that my son one day will enjoy fishing as much as I do.

I love that stinger hook, I can put that together pronto. When I came across that creed song, I had not heard it in many years but it seemed to fitting for the video. That second song, in case you did not catch it, is about a man finding out he is going to have a song. Take a second listen, it really struck home with me. It had my wife in tears! But, based on a couple of the posts, Creed must bring some men to tears as well!

I just took another look at the post of "Mr. Negative", and now it all makes sense. He has a sig that says Dallas Sucks. So instead of promoting a team he likes, he trys to bring down something other people might like. Kinda says it all, doesn't it?

I think he is close to having it figured out......he is on a fishing board. If only we could somehow figure out how to get him out of the office and actually on the water, he would be well on his way to recovery!

I've got a 22.5 ft marshall which of course is a bay boat, but with surprisingly good offshore manners. we do extremely well inshore, but now my partners in crime are getting the offshore bug. How far out do I need to go in order to see some tuna action and how late in the year will they be around before it gets too hot. I fish out of POC and I've taken her out about 33 miles and put the wood to a couple of wahoo drifting skirted ballyhoo. I think I could easily do 50 miles based on my fuel capacity. I was also wondering how you garner your live bait. The sabiki rigs didn't get the job done for me on account of I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Any offshore tips would be greatly appreciated.
