Only way i would buy a diesel is if I worked it.

I can tell you this. If it was easy to sell gas trucks i would have parking lot full of them. There is a reason if we have 120 trucks that maybe 5 of them are gas.

Diesel is a type #2 fuel oil. It bathes the engine in oil. No gasoline to solvent the engine oil off the cylinders. So the engine has a higher level of lubrication.


The weak link. The transmission. Unless it's a serious piece of drive line. The torque from a diesel will destroy it.


Dodge had that problem when they first started selling their trucks with a Cummins. The engine was tuned down as much as Dodge could get away with but it still ate transmissions like lunch.

Slowly, transmissions got beefed up. Different contract supplier. But the engine still had its balls cut. Because in the factory configuration. It's de-tuned to 1/3 the power it'll make.

Same with semi trucks. The damn engine is governed down.

Kinda funny timing but I just got off cars.com while trying to decide if my next truck will be gas or diesel. Leaning towards a one ton diesel today.

I just bought a GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 with the Duramax 3.0. It was my first diesel. If I'm being honest I'm pretty nervous about whether it was the right choice. 5.3 V8s were super tough to find with a model I liked. A lot of trucks out there right now have the 6.2's in them, but there is the huge debate as to whether they require premium gas. I got a different answer every where I looked.

I had a 5.3 Silverado 1500. That truck got 15 in the city, 21-22 on the highway, and 11 pulling my boat.
This new 3.0 duramax is getting 21 in the city, 27-28 on the highway, and 14 and change pulling my boat.

Diesel prices are about 25% higher, but the MPG I'm getting is also about 25% higher. Obviously, maintenance and up keep is higher on the diesel, but at this point I'm planning to trade in every 2 or 3 years so I should avoid the bulk of that. Anyway, the jury is still out for me I guess, so far I'm loving the new truck though and the better MPG.

Depends. I own an old diesel that gets 5-7k miles a year. Its paid for and runs good.
If I was getting new I would probably buy a gasser.

Diesel is about 50% higher than regular gas right now and I'm afraid that it will stay that high.

Check the price of spark plugs and how much money it is to switch them out. The plugs in my 6.2 L99 run about $15 each. Last time a plug shorted out. Only it got replaced. $15 x 8 cylinders is no joke. Let's not get into the crazy expensive coil packs or the plug wires, either.


Diesel? Change the fuel filter and maybe, if maybe. A glow plug.

plugs only need changed every 100,000 miles. you can make up the money with far cheaper oil changes, no def, and cheaper fuel.

Glow plugs or spark plugs? Because a spark plug went bad on my ride at a little over 15,000 miles.

I'm in the same boat as Allison. Got an older 5.9 diesel, 8ft bed, no def, 5K miles a year maybe. Did some steering upgrades, 4" exhaust. That's it. Change the oil, run synthetic and I'll bet it will outlive me...:) And it's 22 years old with 93K original miles on it. I won't pay what dealers want for even a used gas pickup...
