I can only get back to my paternal great grandfather with my hunt and peck search. Anyone use Ancestry.com? Worth the $$?
Keep looking forward. That’s why windshields are larger than rear view mirrors.

Ancestry is worth the money, BUT do not just start accepting people they say may be a possible relative. They give you these hints based on similar names and locations. That's great, but there not always your relative. I have a 2nd cousin that cannot accept this. She went down a rabbit hole and is convinced we're related to George Washington. We're not. Our ancestors did know him and there is correspondence between them in the National Archives, but he's not our relative.
I was fortunate and have a relative with such an unusual name there's never been another person with it. That's how I trace most of my mom's side.
Also, on the census records, not a lot of people could read and write back then, so you'll get some unusual spellings. I've been doing this for about 7 years now. Fun, but time consuming.

Thanks LSS. I’m joining a Scottish clan to take my relatives way back, I hope. They assist with the geneology.
Keep looking forward. That’s why windshields are larger than rear view mirrors.

My niece was trying to get into the DAR and did some research then used one of the services. Through my paternal Grandmother's line they claimed one limb went back to Pocahontas, and another limb back to Edward II of England.
They seemed to jump over the part of the family that came from County Cork, Ireland that Grandma used to talk about .

My line comes from Scotland via Ireland to the US in Pennsylvania. Just can’t find my great great grandpa. I’m pretty sure he and family emigrated from Ireland.
Keep looking forward. That’s why windshields are larger than rear view mirrors.

It's not too expensive for the US files, I think $99 dollars for 6 months but it's another $99 for Europe and so on. We're all immigrants so the $'s add up before the 1700's for most of us.

my brother is heavy into this. He traced ours back to 1400's France, Scottish, German, and Ireland. (no wonder we're either drunks or deacons, some of us both)
Funny thing is. My mothers father side can only be traced back to 1800's.... like they just appeared from nowhere.

If you Google ancestry discounts, you can usually get a better price
