I'll say that Gomez has a fine breakfast. Although, Mi Familia (I think) in Early -just the other side of town- is much better for dinner. However, that's only an opinion.

It's hard to say favorite when it comes to Mexican food because it's all so different.

I've heard some dissenting opinions on this, as there was a thread not too long ago. Everyone likes the hometown place, but seriously, Trevinos in Rockwall really is a very good place. It's not traditional but it's still excellent in my opinion.

The problem with Mexican food places that I've found is that they're not normally around very long. It's hard for me to think back and remember *the good ol' place*. I mean, buffet style -Lupe's on Industrial in Dallas used to be fairly good. Matt's Rancho -if you call it true Mexican food- used to be good. El Taquito on East Grand was fairly tasty...

What kind of place are you looking for?

In Brownwood, Ricardos is very good for breakfast. This guiso tacos were excellent.

On that same note, Pepe's E Mito's in Deep Ellum always had a very good guiso, too.

Looks like I found some new good places!!!

In Del Rio we ate at a place down on the river in town... can't remember it right now... it was fair.

In Ft. Stockton, hit Sarah's... off of downtown area right before a neighbor area...looks like a major hole in the wall.... good stuff!!

In Alpine, try La Casita... it is behind the football field in a house... hence the name... good stuff also!!

Jigro... where are your places?

For authentic Mexican vs. Tex-mex you can't go wrong with Gonzales' on in Pleasant Grove (Buckner and Bruton I believe). They have a second location off of Jefferson in Oak Cliff but I think the one in PG is better.

The best place that I've ever had authentic Mexican cuisine was in Whitney Texas at Monte's family across fro Brookshire's on 933! Their food is EXCELLENT, their prices cannot be beat anywhere!! My wife & I ate there Monday night, we had chicken sour cream enchilladas, chips a side order of sliced avocada, 2 teas & the bill was a whopping $12.88!!!!! The plate had 3 enchilladas, rice & homestyle pinto beans!!!I've eaten all over the bottom 13 states when I was trucking & there is not any better out there that I've been to!

Not in Texas but awfully close. Head out of El Paso to Las Cruces, NM and go to "Old Mesilla". Sunday brunch at the Eagle or any mexican food restaurant. Outstanding.

El Paso to Las Cruces!!!! My mom lives in Cruces. In El Paso all of the smaller "hole in the wall" places good. None of this tex mex junk. I work at a "Tex Mex" place and nothing compares to those places. I remember the Burrito house close to Bassstt Center and getting 15-20 for the staff. Mole, relleno, carne desebrada you name it. Most were $1.00 each. One heck of a deal.
PLUS... My mom is from Mexico. She could turn leftover lawn trimmings into feast. All our neighborhood friends would come over and always ask what she was cooking.

I have various places for certian things.

Ramero's Las Brazas for pozole.
El Fenix for general tex-mex.
Gringo's for chicken enchillada's.
Baladeras for tamales.
Los Cucos for huevos rancheros.

I haven't found on place that does it all the best. I'll keep looking though knowing I'll never find it. \:\)

Cristina's in Lewisville is our all-around favorite. They have perfect salsa, great chimichangas and cheese enchiladas, and the margaritas are the best I've ever had. They also have a big grill platter thingie with ribs, fajitas and shrimp "for 2" that actually feeds the 2 of us twice. The food is consistent and the service is good without being overly helpful and annoying.

Same goes for Pepper's in Alamagordo, NM. The best red enchilladas on the face of the Earth. None better in my opinion.

Christina's is definitely delicious!

For a short time, there was a place called Patron's, up in Highland Village/Flower Mound area...GREAT food, GREAT service, and cheap prices...

Sadly, I guess it was too cheap, they were only open about six months. Sucks.

And yeah, while I know it's a chain, I'm also quite partial to my local El Chico's. Always great service and tasty food, love their gaucomole and their Gaudalajara tacos with Shrimp.

Los Cucos. We always went to the one in New Braunsfels after a drunken day of floating the river but I know they are everywhere.

Also Don'Key in Pasadena. I grew up with the owner's son.

When I was running to Harlingen with building materials for Cameron Wholesale back in the mid 80's, there was a cafe in Three Rivers, Texas named Carter's I beleive, man they had some damn good Mexican food, also there was a place in Raymondville right on 77 at a red light in town that was a good place to eat, cannot recall the name of the place. I dunno if these places are still open or not, but they were really good!

Being retired military I have lived and traveled extensively, and in MHO you haven't eaten the best until you have eaten at El Charro in Tyler, Texas. There are two locations, Fifth street and West Erwin. The West Erwin is the oldest and has been around for over forty years. This location also serves great Margaritas as well as their food is all made from scratch. They cook their own chips and have a special sauce for them that is unreal. All the food is prepared by authentic Mexican chefs. They are watched over very close by the Remeriz family.
When you visit let Tony, Gus, or Rudy know I said "Hello".

If you are up in Denison, Las Brisas is very good and has very reasonable prices. I get crispy tacos and I do not have to season them with salt at all. Their salsa is very good on them but they are great with or without salsa.

Starless, I favor El Chico's too. Their tortilla soup is out of this world. Grilled seasoned chicken, alvacado slices, monterey jack cheese, and a broth that will make you want to slap your mama. Add a couple of spoonfulls of salsa and you are very happy.

Their guacamole, tacos, enchilladas are all very good. I am addicted to their tortilla soup.

I've not been much of an El Chico's fan ever since I had the swirly margarita with several dead flies in the bottom. Man, it's harder to suck a dead fly through a straw than you would think!

They didn't charge me for the drink though! This particular El Chico's was in Wichita Falls.

Teg - The only El Chico I've been too is the one in Flower Mound, and so far it's been nothing but great. Fast service and great food.

Maybe the Fly incident was just a one time thing, or you were at a bad location lol.

I sure hope it was a one time thing. Even though I didn't taste anything, a fly would not be my first choice if I took a notion to eat an insect. A worm marinating in mescal would be much better.

There used to be a little place in Hobbs, N.M. named Mc Elroy's I think , they had the biggest & best chili rellenos that I've ever senn or eaten anywhere!! It was right on 62/180 in town on the south side going towards Carlsbad! I stopped in there at least once a week in the early 90's! It was great, I wonder if they are still open? Does anyone know?

The place has maybe 10 tables and they fel sticky all the time, lol cause they're too busy cooking I guess, lol. Even play spanish tv on the tube. The green hotsauce will blow your mind, and the food is about as cheaply priced as eating at mcdonalds now and days. The other one on pioneer(303) I wasnt impressed with.

O but i do know bout Henry's-- used to work there when it had a club on the back of it called the scotland club-- Henry would bring in some class acts as far as hispanic music--- got to meet Salina when she was young-- i think she was bout 16 then & a little bit on the chubby side-- Also Ruben Ramos OOOO My at the fun that was had at Henry's diner/ Scotland club

The food is Tex-mex & big portions & resonably priced

I'm sure i clogged a few a arteries there

Class act The Hogeda's(Henry's family)

Henry is a prime example of the success a person can have from hard work & dedication--- He was a cook for the Zentner's for years before he broke out on his own

CUddo's to you Canepone--- you from San angelo ?? Born & raised there myself but i got to Austin ASAP !!!

In Alice Texas, the main road that runs through there I beleive is 285, there is a place on the right as your heading north, I dont remeber the name but you can miss it considering there will be 20-30 vehicles parked there all day. I think that is by far the best place I have ever eaten Tex-MEx
