Yamaha 150 SHO starting to sputter once in awhile and thinking injectors may be clogged a little. I buy ethanol free whenever possible and use Star Tron other times.

Sea Foam, best product on the market IMO. Pour in some sea foam every time you add gas. $7 at Academy. cheers

Change all fuel filters. It is starving for gas which can cause damage. There is one filer on the motor under all the shields that is always missed by the do it yourself guys.

Did that Donald, had to get a special wrench to get the bowl loose. Also I replace the 10 micron fuel filter. After it sputters the first time I rev the motor a little in neutral and it runs ok. I idle a lot graphing and that may be part of the problem.

Reason I ask about Ring Free was because it's recommended in the owners manual but I understand there may be better products on the market.

I though ring free was more for the 2-stroke motors not the SHO?

Yeah, Yamaha tries to push people to buy that insanely over priced Oil and fuel additive. Unless you have money to throw away theres no sense in buying the Yamaha brand, Ive found sea foam to perform as good if not better than ring free and I run quicksilver oil (same as yamalube) for $10-$15 less per gallon. Worth noting I run a 2 stroke.

I use ring free. On my 4th Yamaha with no problems. Sea foam is great for a shock treatment but it contains a lot of alcohol and is more of a solvent. To me it's like adding more ethanol to your tank. Okay if your running it all out. Not okay if your storing it.

+1 on the fuel filters.
Yamaha's are tanks, but they have a lot of fuel filters, at least 3 if not more, and if it is starting to get hard to start or dies, you likely need to replace all of them. I'm a fairly handy guy, but back in the day when I had issues with mine Youtube wasn't around and unless you had a shop manual at that time there was no info on where the harder to find filters were. Either look on Youtube or elsewhere to see how to replace those others OR take it in. I had my HPDI 200 dying all the time, replaced the 2 but no help, once they replaced the other(s) it was solved.

Good luck! Gig 'em! Class of '96

Thanks for everyone's help and advice. There's a lot of wisdom and helpful info on TFF.

Was introduced to SeaFoam years ago when I was constantly cleaning the green crusty film from my small engine filters and carburetor parts caused by ethanol. Starting using SeaFoam and haven't had an issue since. It now gets used in everything that uses gas. I also prefer to use 93 Octane in my small engines and boat engine. Agree if you have a Yamaha CHANGE AND MAINTENANCE ALL FUEL FILTERS FAITHFULLY!

Ring free has kept me on the water for years. It goes in every tank along with marine stabil. I learned the hard way.
