Just how far back in a creek do you fish and how substantial is the creek? I have heard the saying I caught them in the back of the creeks but I am confused as to the definition. If you are fishing Lake Fork as an example would you go all the way back in Birch, Mustang, Little Caney, et. al. until you ran out of fishing water? I know a creek does not constantly run water but how big does it need to be to provide a possible productive habitat? Thanks in advance for any advice/information.

We have pulled the trolling motor up, trimmed the motor all the way up, and push poled in to some places to catch 'em.

For me in most creeks that stroll through the country side; getting past the mouth sometimes is a chore. Once you do that the creek will begin to get deeper and the water will begin to clear up. I have always found resident fish back there for miles in many of them. When the banks get out of the water and some of the trees have either blown over into the water or Beaver cut some down to provide Lay-Down targets. I like the Fall months to do this and target the lay-downs with a 1/4 oz spinner bait down all sides; then pitch a lizard on a Trig right in the middle.

If I say back of a creek I usually mean the back 1/3.

Caught them last week in 1' of water. Had to move my trolling motor up a few different times.

This thread is helpful. I fished a few creeks on Fork earlier this week but did not venture to the back 20% in most. But on most I found gray herons about halfway back so I thought I'd gone far enough.

But on most I found gray herons about halfway back so I thought I'd gone far enough. There are a few creeks on Fork they haven't made it all the way back. They are still sitting around secondary points leading back.

If I say back of a creek I usually mean the back 1/3. +1 Some creeks at Fork like Dale are the size of many small lakes. So when you talk about the back 1/3 of Dale it is still a pretty sizable piece of water. But that is exactly how I break down creeks.

I fish a creek ALL the way back, if I suspect fish are in it, doesn't matter the size, small, large, medium or itty bitty. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
