I dont use or follow Instagram, I assume alot of fishermen dont as well. If I did I am not sure I would "like" posts very often.

PJ, I think their is a business problem with the existing ecosystem but I will throw out a few things to ponder. It seems like you will have to get the brands comfortable that their accommodations are not going to double when they sign up with your program; companies of scale like to budget and it seems like when your clearinghouse service gets rolling it will be hard for them to budget. It seems like for the anglers that don't get heavily discounted or free stuff, its a way to play. However, for folks that are already heavily sponsored, seems like a downgrade to the angler have to outlay cash for gear and then hope you get a partial or full reimbursement. Lastly, it seems like it could be semi-people intensive for your clearinghouse service to evaluate, paypal the angler, send the paperwork to the hundreds of brands, and chase getting your money back -- would think through that workflow to see how to take as much friction out of it as you can. It will work with 20 credit back transactions a day, but I would think ahead around 800 a day and how to streamline it.

This sort of exists already. Its called National Pro Staff. NPS.

Its not identical but it has a lot of trying to be pros being rewarded with sponsorships based on their social media, product marketing, etc..

I think the cash side of the deal will give you problems but it seems you have already done a lifetime of work by 23 so Im sure youll figure it out if youre dedicated to this.

Also in the news the founders of Instagram just left because they believe the new owners (Facebook) are trying to kill it by incorporating the features into Facebook. Make sure product is built to be flexible on which social media platform you associate too.

I tend to agree with some other folks that fishermen by and large are not the most active social media users. I am young and have been on facebook since the beginning, but I don't have an IG account and have absolutley no use for one. Still use a hotmail email address.

On the flip side, I also spend very little money on tackle these days. So maybe the guys who go out and spend a boatload are also the ones who spend a bunch of money?

Not saying it's a bad idea, but it would take more convincing for me to believe that social media is a big product sales driver in the fishing industry.

PJ, this is an extremely brilliant idea! The incentive for a company to give free or discounted products to an individual should be directly linked to the ROI the company receives for doing so. This would create a perfect balance with little to no risk to the bait company while encouraging the angler to actually promote the products they desire which is the sole reason for giving the discounted/free products.

Brutally honest question-how are you getting paid out of this-what's in it for you? You make it sound like it's all for the guys posting. If guys know this then they might trust the process a bit more.

I do find it funny how you asked about a Social media pro staff phone app on a fishing forum that has an average age of "older than dirt". But in all honesty I don't see how its sustainable most of your users phase out quickly when they figure out its not easy to get free product. Your age group is gonna be high school and college anglers and then your user retainage after that will prob be really low. People don't have time to promote stuff on Instagram when they have a real job, friends and GFs. Life will always get in the way for these flash in the pan pro staffers so you will always need to find more users.

If the ap results in less # signs being used in my fishing friend's postings on facebook, I'm all for it.

Instagram is basically for hot models trying to promote their fake lives and young people trying to emulate them by faking their lives as well. But sadly it makes people rich and famous because kids actually fall for the lie.

Hey everyone! My name is PJ. Im 23 years old and a lifelong bass angler and entrepreneur. Im working on a new concept for the fishing industry and would love your brutally honest feedback.

I used to own a lure company, PPMB fishing skirts. I started it in my junior year of high school with three friends. I built it up to over 150 customers and a team of 25 pro staffers and was featured in Bass Times. I also fished competitively, started a bass fishing club in high school, wrote articles for Bassin and Bass Angler Magazine, and went to iCast.

Fishing is in my blood. For the last few years I have owned a marketing agency, but REALLY want to get back in the fishing industry.

The idea looking for feedback on is an app/website. The concept is that anglers are scored/ranked on how influential they are on Instagram and are rewarded with cash back on purchases for posting on Instagram about what they bought from participating brands.

When I owned my lure company I was constantly asked for free product. Instead of lure company's having to give away free product, the more influential an angler is, the more cash back they get.

We score their influence from 0 to 10. A 0 has no influence and a 10 would be Kevin VanDam or Mike Iaconelli. A 1 gets 10% of their purchase back for posting and a 10 gets 100% of their purchase back. Very few people score a 10, most score between 1 and 4.

We partner with lure companys and other companys in the fishing industry. Anglers come to our website and see a list of the participating brands. They can shop online at any of those brands and get cash back.

We measure influence not by the number of followers they have (people can buy fake followers), but things such as the engagement they receive when they post. Someone may have 50,000 followers but only get 100 likes when they post. An angler with 2,000 followers can be more influential than one with 10,000. I am currently working with some influencer marketing agencys to develop the scoring formula.

To remove the risk for the brands, anglers only get the cash back after making the post, uploading a screenshot of the post, and the post meeting the requirements the brands set. The post must be up for at least 24 hours before they can submit for cash back.

The brand owners set the requirements they need to be eligible for the cash back - such as mentioning the brands website or giving a discount code to their followers. We make sure the post meets all of their requirements before submitting it for cashback.

If the most meets all the brands requirements, you get the cash back sent to your PayPal

Drop this idea and use your marketing agency skills and put them to work for brands in the outdoor space. We have an agency and that's exactly what we do. These brands need talent and people with skills, so leverage what you've learned and get after the client service work. It's out there and it's profitable.

Or find a brand and join their team and start working your way though it. You've clearly got the business chops to make a few things happen, you can use that to join a brand that you believe in.
