I would like to make an early January drive in trip to Mexico's Lake Oviachic. My regular crew cannot go until February. We will be gone 12 days; leaving early Wednesday morning Jan. 2 and back home Sunday Jan. 13
- Two fisherman are welcome to ride with me.
- I would like another truck and boat to follow.

The expense of such a trip is half of a 3 day fly in trip.
- We each pay our part of the trip: Gas - food - lodging - tips - toll booths - travel visas - license and etc..
- I will help you with all your papers to cross into Mexico with your rig.

Drug Cartels with guns and stuff.

Plus I'm not retired yet. I can't be taking that many days off from work.

Well I could but I wouldn't have a job when I got back or a wife.

How long is the drive once you cross the border?

I've been to Mexico over twenty times. Salto, Mateos, Bacarrac, Comedero. I take my own scales, and have caught two over 13. One trip to Bacarrac I caught nine over ten. I go mainly with Chapman, but have been with Speed, Hollan, and other outfitters. I have never felt threatened on any trip, and I loved driving into the small towns, or over to the coast for lunch instead of eating at the camps. Mazatlan is one of my favorite cities. I've never had a trip down there I didn't regret having to come home.
If I go to Mexico, it is to catch a fourteen pounder. Not to drive in with an eight pounder as the best shot. I know where to catch those.
Don't believe the rumor mongers.

Not much of a story. I have had several bad trips to the other lakes deeper into Mexico. My theory is because those lakes put nets in for a certain number of days and take them out. We were there just as they were putting the nets in. The fishing for the next two days was way off. We left and stopped at Oviachic on the way out to finish off the week. I have never had a bad trip to Oviachic. Some times it takes a full day to figure them out as on any lake. Then the catching begins. We average 100 Bass per day with big numbers over 5 lbs.. The nets are left in the water on Oviachic; so the bass are acclimated to them. Nets come out at the end of the season in April.

There are so many 5 and 6 lb. males in that lake it is difficult to catch a Big 10 lb. Bass on the beds in the shallow brush. You have much better chance at Bass 10 lbs and up staying in deep water on the flights that are coming into the shallows. These Big Females have not been so cowed down and beat up yet. Once on the beds the males will not allow one to bite they are so fast and aggressive. You can put that male in the livewell, fish a few bushes to let the Female settle down, come back and catch another big male that has already moved in on her.

We plan our trips around the nets. You should try that.

We have tried that and it is a little difficult when you drive in, instead of flying in. We have to go when we get a group together good or bad. Then when you get there the nets are off schedule for all kinds of reasons.
- Bad Weather - Freezer truck broke down and fish could not be picked up - Someone died has been used many times. Truth is no one really knows; it is just speculation on why the schedule is off.

Most of the lakes farther south that have the commercialized camps are not drive in friendly. They charge us just as if we flew in on a trip to stay there per day. Most are running $250 per day per person. Oviachic is $60 per day and 98% of there business is drive in. The facility is old; but very clean and the food is excellent. The accommodations are good with hot water on demand, digital air-conditioning units and each cabin has a full kitchen.
