Nothing fancy. Just something to start with.
On average, your heart beats 100,000 times a day. One day, one of those heartbeats will be your last. Then what?

Can't go wrong with a Cabelas combo. The TFO NXT combo is also good and has a good warranty.

Have had troubles with the cabela's fly rods, would definitely go with TFO. TFO warranty is outstanding also. Son lost 2 pieces of fly rod when encountered a bear and replaced for very minimal price. Later loaned rod to someone who lost a piece, I took it in and while looking the rod over saw the ferrules were a little loose and they replaced the whole rod for same minimal price. Neither my son or I had even noticed that. The TFO NXT is also a decent rod and reel. Son was fishing for trout/salmon almost everyday on Russian River in Alaska and except for the lost pieces, no issues. That is a lot of hard fishing on a fly rod.

Pretty much any of these rods mentioned will get you started. After getting some experience under your belt you'll be in a position to make informed choices based on your own experience. For now, just learn to cast and catch some fodh. That's my take on the matter.
Good luck and tight lines!

Had a question from a reader asking a similar question. Here is our reply posted on our Blog: What is the best setup for a beginner...? Also, if I had to do it over again, would have spent more on a quality weight forward fly line, an economical rod that fit my personal preference - fast action rods, a cheap reel to use as a line holder but saved for a quality reel to be purchased later when more funds showed in my wallet. Can cast with a quality fly line without a reel and a budget rod (this one was $20 or less).... Also, found out once you have the timing down on your cast, no need for a rod or reel... And, toughest thing to learn was the backcast... mades lots of terrible casts because I did not pay attention to my backcast when I first started fly fishing.

What you fishing for, OP?
My BIL had a 5wt combo off Amazon that came with rod, reel. line, leader and even a few flies for about $100. I thought it cast just fine.
Eagle Claw fiberglass fly rods are popular in some circles and are super inexpensive. Fiberglass is harder to break than the graphite ones.
I think when folks really get into fishing moving water for cold water trout using dry flies they look for rods that excel in line control and presentation.
In the saltwater and freshwater fishing I do, I often like rods that are slow in action like Cabelas CGR line up. They are relatively short and allow for great touch and an easy relaxed casting stroke. But other times in the saltwater, I like a very fast action rod that I can use against tough windy conditions.
Then there all the different line weights ratings. Its real hard to come up with one rod that works everywhere for everything.
Finding one rod to fit someone is a difficult task.
I did read somewhere that type A hard charging personalities do better with fast action rods and type B laid back folks prefer slower action rods.
Are you wading, bank fishing, fishing from a boat, float tube, kayak?
What Ive seen happen is that people that fly fishing appeals to in the long run often end up with several or more rods to solve specific needs. If fly fishing doesnt end up being something you like, one rod will be one too many.

Bank pond fishing for bass, crappie, bluegill. Never been trout fishing and nowhere near salt water. Don't think I'm coordinated enough for fishing with it from a kayak or boat.
Thanks for the information.
