Moved back to West Texas, was really hoping Alan Henry would be my go to lake seeing as how its only 30 minutes from me. A buddy and myself went this morning it was a gorgeous day but the lake seems almost dead. Didnt see bait fish, nothing to speak of on the graphs. Hardly any fish busting the top of the water. Caught two dinks between us and that was it. Heard rumors that the lake has been over fished during the spawns over the years. All I know is that lake did not appear to be very alive today. Any thoughts on this?

She aint what she once was. There are still some fish. You just have to find that one shad in the lake that the bass are all chasing around.

When we were fishing the Friday night working man's T's last year, we did pretty well. Fished 12 times and had 6 over 6 lbs, with the big one being 6.97. I am told by everyone that catching ANY fish is a fluke now, even though I still guide on the lake and we do pretty well. It DEFINALY is not the OLD LAH. You might want to try JB Thomas or Champion or some of the other smaller lakes around. EVERYOHE says the lake is dead, but the 6 over 6 shows that it is not the case, You just have to know the lake or get lucky a lot. My big fish alst year was 6.40 and y partner I went with had 2 for 5.68, so it was pretty good fishing for us. BE PATIENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you think you are fishing too slow, SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tracking studies work SO WELL on that lake too, since MOST of the fish spawn in 12-20' of water, they are not even in the column to get shocked up, but what do I know about that lake, nothing I guess, acroding to everyone that quoates TPWD. Go figure. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Thad has caught a fish or two out there... Id listen to him haha!

Grape and Little Grape have always been good to be as well as Gobbler... but those are the most popular creeks on the lake. Id say dont be afraid to fish deep... like really deep. The LMB in that lake go to 25+ for most of the year and come up to spawn.

Maybe TPWD needs to do some restocking and not just bass.

I am also passive aggressive towards people who incessantly disagree with 99% of people who say AH sucks, and who also take shots at biologists with masters degrees in fish sampling suggesting that they don't effing realize that electrofishing boats don't sample well 15-20 ft deep on highland reservoirs.

Regarding the original topic; Yes, Kungfoo, black bass fishing is awful on Alan Henry, it's not just you. It's an unproductive reservoir (due to either poor water chemistry, lack of essential nutrients like phosphorous and nitrogen, or both) that can't support a diverse plankton bloom and therefor can't support enough baitfish to maintain large black bass. Without regular water level fluctuations and well-timed and stable high-water periods during the spring to early summer to inject invertebrates, nutrients and new organic material into the lake regularly, I doubt the fishing will ever cycle above "ok" again.

It goes through cycles just like every other lake, but its got a ton of spots in it. They certainly didnt just disappear. Its also a tough time of year to catch fish anywhere. Theyre getting ready to start chasing shad.

That lake has been unreal in the past 3 years. The year after I left Midland, they had 8-10lb fish being caught weekly. And I think they had a few over 12. They just live deep. People who cant fish in more than 25 are going to struggle. Those fish come up to feed on flats in 30. They settle down in 35-40. And in the spring, they slide up and get catchable in the bushes.

Here is my armchair biologist opinion (dream) for the lake.
1. fertilize the water
2. dump a ton of threadfin adult shad in the back of every major creek.
3. same as above with gizzard shad and bream
4. Dump a Ton of crawfish in the dirty side to create a jig bite on the lake
5. restock Smallmouth in 2 years and hope they stick around.
6. for 2 years Block off little grape/Ince/Big grape from march-june to allow those girls to spawn in peace

These are just dreams... Haha

You guys that missed it in like 2003-2008 really missed out on some of the best fishing going on in Texas during that time. The number and size of fish caught in the Spring was unreal. Go check the Sharelunker entries in 2005 and 2006. https://tpwd.texas.gov/spdest/visitorcen...0&Submit=Go

Never seen so many big fish on beds and I have a place on Fork. The lake has changed though and it's a shame because it was amazing.

Thank you all for your responses. We were discussing graphing the lake and looking for deep humps because they definatley weren't in the the shallows out to around 12'. Fishing deep just feels like that is what is needed to get any fish in the boat.
I came from Fayetteville and Sommerville and about 21' was the deepest I fished. I will gas up the boat and do some screen work!

There are always some fish up shallow. If you want spots, go throw a jerkbait or small tube/finesse worm on the windiest shoreline you can find. You will catch fish. If you want a big bite go to another lake or fish at night.

Good luck unless your name is Pool. One is a guide the other the lake manager. Ive been fishing with Phillip the guide a couple times with limited success but did learn some things. Not sure if its just bad luck on my part but almost every report he has they are knocking them dead........until I go with him LOL. He does know the lake well. Maybe go out with him and see how you do. That would be my advice. Hes a good guy and knows what hes doing.
