It's been a little over a year since Hurricane Harvey hit Rockport and I am wondering how the fishing is now? I've been studying the area using the Navionics boating app on my iPhone and am trying to decide if I should take a trip there, or is it too soon? Any updates on the recovery efforts would be greatly appreciated.

For the most part Rockport has recovered pretty well. I've been down there a few times now since the Hurricane. We stay in Rockport and fish the general area. I'd say go ahead and make the trip.

Is that mostly flats fishing? I cant get much shallower than 1.5-2 feet. Wanted to support rockport with some vacation dollars. Another idea would be to offer $100 for a backseat in a shallower boat.

Just got back after being there during the tropical depression. It has recovered or is recovering enough and with your boat, there are plenty of places to fish. I stayed in the Coral Reef cottages not far from Conn Brown North. I like the smaller ramp they call the "game warden" ramp-it is a single, but was never crowded. If you have a depthfinder you will find a navionics card extremely helpful. We had many calm days where after launching, we worked several drains then went across the bay to Mud Island. I have an aluminum boat that does not have a jack plate but there were plenty of areas that we fished and despite all the fresh water, did OK-all on artificials/gulps. While down there, venture over to Packery channel and try your luck there. We managed to catch pompano, reds, trout and some small flounder. Word of warning for eats in Rockport-things fold up pretty early. Poormans is good and grab a burger at Steerburger.

I agree with the above post, plenty of places to fish, I don't like water under 2' and I can fish a lot of areas there. I usually put in at Conn Brown. And Steerburger is the best burger joint in South Texas. We usually stay at drifter's resort. They have water hose and power for the boat by the driveway and they are next door to Steerburger. smile Oh and you should have electronics with navionics, it will help you avoid the shallow stuff.

There's a lot of areas you can fish with a 2' draft boat or deeper as long as one is willing to get out and wade as well. Don't have to have a shallow draft boat to fish a lot of areas.. especially rockport. South of the Cosway in the upper laguna has less area for a deeper draft boat but even there it's still doable. Fishing in Rockport has been good.

I was just down there a few weeks ago after one year absence from Harvey. Some of the waters and islands have changed/moved. But the fishing areas are every bit as alive as it was a year ago.

One 10-pounder is better than ten 1-pounders; but 100 1-pounders is ok too!
