So we had a family / fishing vacation to Bolivar this past weekend.
Thursday - 09/13: Beautiful drive down from DFW with some light showers after we hit The Woodlands. Of course from Conroe down, the Amber Alert signs are all saying "tropical storm, you keep going, you will die". Okay not the exact words but, you get the point. In the middle of the night, the tropical storm really hit Galveston / Bolivar.
Friday - 09/14: Woke up to catch the ferry across to Galveston to meet our shark fishing guide at the Galveston yacht basin; yep still raining. Rain for the most part was coming through in bands with drizzle in between. Long story short, we called off the shark trip and went back across to Bolivar, sat on the deck and watched it rain. The gulf was blown completely out and chocolate milk. Friday night it started to break up. Went back across the ferry to Pleasure Pier and walked around.
Saturday - 09/15: Beautiful morning but the gulf still wasn't looking good but, that didn't stop us from playing on the beach....just no fishing. Rented a yak Saturday afternoon with hopes that we could run line on Sunday morning. Kids drove over to Galveston and hit Moody Gardens and the Aquarium.
Sunday - 09/16: Incredible morning, calm gulf and water was starting to clear up. Nick (son) and I got to the beach, setup camp and set lines. Managed two hard heads and learned a lot for next time. Water started to green up as the day went on. Used dead finger mullet. We opted for an extended checkout Sunday; the kids had already started to drive back to Keller and my better 99% looked at me and said, "can we stay one more night, just the two of us?" Didn't have to ask me twice, so the two of us and the dog bought 3-1/2 pounds of shrimp and went Bubba Gump!
Monday - 09/17: Got up to another beautiful day, great looking water but, didn't get a line wet; it was time to start packing up and make the trek back home.
Not much of a great fishing report but, we made the most of the tropical storm, had great family time and learned a lot more than we knew before going. Can't wait to get back down to the coast again.
