How common is it to catch redear on an artificial? All the ones I remember catching have been on live bait.

Not uncommon for me at all. I have some cheap little 1 1/2 inch hard crank baits that consistently work for red ear. More or less in a gray silver black color

I catch a lot of them on "Live Worms"! I do have friends of mine that catch a bunch of Redear on small crank baits like the ones boocat stated above. I have also caught them on Gulp Alive Minnows, and Gulp Alive Crickets. Crappie Jigs Chartreuse/Black work well.
IGFA World Record Rio Grande Cichlid. Lake Dunlap. John 3:16 Sinner's Prayer. God forgive me a sinner. I accept Jesus Christ as my Savior !

I catch a lot of Redear using Rooster Tails,Gulp Alive Minnows, and Jigs. Small crank baits work good also. Best colors are Silver,Chartreuse/Black,and Red/Black. Just my two cents.
