Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever been concerned with the joint on the breakaway trailer failing over time? Seems like a lot of weight on a little hinge.

Why, you got one ? Sure sells a lot of boats and just about every manufacturer has them.
I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed. Conscience never acquits, it either accuses or excuses.

Yes, I have one. The "new to me boat" I bought last year has a breakaway and I have never had one before this. I have never heard of one failing I just thought I would ask. Its pretty amazing that the joint can hold all of that weight.

Lots of big Rangers and skeeters have them, even some of the bay boats. Haven't heard of any failures yet but they all have safety chains just in case.

Yes have heard of failures like any piece of your trailer or boat over time that pin can weaken. I would check it every now and then for any play in the tongue while your not connected to the truck, would also swing it out every so often if you don't already do so to store your boat and make sure pin does not look bent.

That bolt will wear eventually, and you'll see a visible sag at the joint, along with extra noises when you're turning and/or going over bumps. I replaced mine a few months ago, fixed it right up. Be sure and get a Grade 8 bolt.

Keep an eye on it as part of a regular check. Mine has play and I've talked with the trailer company about it. They dont seem to really care lol

Inspect for rust and corrosion a couple of times a year. Only failures I have seen is internal corrosion due to the dissimilar metals involved.

I dont see the bolt or pin wearing in a conventional set up, the steel is softer than the bolt and pin.
BUT in a year my marine master trailer has a ton of wear on the top and bottom plate, I can lift it 4x as much as a year ago. The holes are oblong now, adding 1/8 to the hole.
Im going to have to weld new plates on. Im planning to use AR400 plate this time, it should not wear and I already have it. The bolt and pin then will be the softest part of the equation.

I had to cut the hinged part completely off, from my 08 Skeeter. Reattached the brake assembly to the frame. Lost about 16" tongue length but it hasn't been a problem.

This is not a swing away, its a Champion drop and slide back model. If any of you guys have a Champion or Stratos with this style of hitch you need to make sure that the recall was taken care of. This happened to me yesterday morning, in the dark. God saved someones life yesterday, because it was about 1 from coming completely detached from my truck. Safety chains would have done nothing and the break away cable would have done nothing to stop this trailer and boat once it was loose.

Wow, have never seen anything like that. God was certainly looking after you. If that had came loose going down the highway, well hate to think what would have happened.

I had a magic-tilt trailer (not very good quality trailers btw) on my old center console and stopped at a gas station in Cedar Hill on way back from coast and happened to see a crack in the same spot as that champion pic above that was about 80% through. Had to have boat and trailer towed. I had the tongue replaced with a non-swing model, didnt want to risk it.

Since they are no longer in business who do you see about the recall? I have a 2003 188DC that has that type on it. Also where do you check for the recall ?

I know the tongue on my buddies triton is completely trashed. It needs to be replaced. Beyond wore out.
