I know Im preaching to the choir but I was running at morning twilight on Lake Granbury. Strobed channel markers on the lake are our superhighway. You follow them exclusively due to all the trees a few hundred feet to the side of them. I was heading to the dam and all of a sudden I come up on a kayak zinging out in the middle of the channel without any nav lights and it was a dark kayak! I dont understand why people do this?!? You all know this. If you see somebody doing it, could you please talk to them. It would not only kill them but emotionally scar the people in the boat for the rest of their lives.

It happens too often. Hopefully you scared the daylights out of him and he will know better next time... but don't count on it.

Thats crazy and stupid. Anytime Im on big water and its dark or even close to dark I have my 360 white light on and I have a very bright LED cannon that I can shine at boaters coming my way. You will know Im there!
I've never been good, But I've been Lucky! I don't Lie or Exaggerate, but sometimes I remember BIG!

Been relying on bright flashlight and head lamp and staying near shore in shallow water. Just got my yak attack visi carbon pro today. I am not just worried about at night but also want the flag for extra daytime visibility.

Probably 50-100 ft. I finally flagged down a BRA police boat and they said theyd keep an eye out for it. Like I said, telling people here isnt the issue. All of you guys KNOW the dangers. Its just like using the orange flags in a four wheeler. The cops said theyd keep an eye out for it. I dont even think it was somebody fishing. I think they were out getting their daily exercise.

"Nav Lights" aren't required for kayaks but a 360degree white light 30 minutes prior/post sunset/sunrise is
I believe the second a kayaker puts a TM on their kayak they are supposed to have the red/green nav lights though

Kayaks with no motor have same light requirements as sailboats under 14 foot without motor. Minimum need is a flashlight. Should have more to be safe, but this is the minimum.
Should not use red/green lights unless they are your nav lights as it could confuse other boaters.

Pat: I see people walking on the shoulder of a highway all the time wearing all dark clothing! Do they have a death-wish? Not being political, but I suspect many are "without papers" and not wanting to be seen. I wonder how many are hit by vehicles? I never kayak in the dark, but if I did, I would certainly have my LED flashlight going all around any time I heard a boat engine! Thanks for being observant! IslandJim

With the sport growing so fast we're getting a lot of people that just don't know any better. In a kayak we don't really need to follow the boat lanes but if we do then the side is a good place. If you need to go to the other side it's just like crossing the street. Go straight across and fast.
I hate being on open water with only a 360 light. They just look like one of the many lights on the shore behind it. A boat on plane may not be able to tell the difference between somebodies dock light in the distance and a 360 light on a kayak until they are on top of it.

We have had some very close calls on Worth running back to the ramp a dusk and yaks crossing with no light. We run back at a slower pace than we run up, but still dangerous at dark with no lights crossing the main lake. My partner and I have stopped to check and suggest some lighting to them in the past, but or ally it appears to fall of deaf ears or pride keeps hem from taking the advice to heart. I know not all boats go slower and look out for other vessels when running the lake.
