That office, based in Kansas City, includes the Table Rock Lake area where the boat sank, killing 17.
“During the course of the initial part of our investigation, the fact finding part, we identified stuff that could point to some sort of criminal activity,” said Alana Miller, a Coast Guard spokeswoman. “And we are not in the business of criminal investigations.”

What the heck does that mean? I suspect it means that the owners may have acted criminally, like not maintaining the boats properly, or the like. I’m really hoping it doesn’t mean there was sabotage in some way. It was an interesting development, especially when the coast guard worded the statement that way.

could also mean they found evidence of ancillary criminal activity, not directly related to the cause of the incident they were investigating. For example if they uncovered 2 kilos of cocaine on board the vessel.

That’s a good point. Could also be the reason for this: Miller would not elaborate on what that potential criminal activity may be. She did say that the Marine Board of Investigation and the Coast Guard Investigative Service division consulted with its legal department before the incident was referred.
