Ive been pretty loyal to dobyns for close to 10 years. Ive only broken one rod tip in that time and it was completely my fault and the customer service was great. Ive bought used rods from people that needed guides replaced and a few other minor things and once again the CS was great.
Last week I stopped at a tackle store in the DFW area and was looking at the rods to see what they had, didnt spot any dobyns and asked the guy behind the counter and he told me they had had a little over 250 broken rods in the last year so they stopped carrying them. I was shocked and still am. I didnt think to ask about the volume of rods sold overall but plan to the next time I stop by there, I assume theyd be taking a loss or close to it to just stop carrying them all together.
Ive got a couple champ extremes, several champions, couple Sierras and a couple furys. Never had any problems with them aside from the one I broke by being stupid. Id like to hear others opinions of the rods and if youve had bad experiences. Ive hardly ever heard anyone have anything bad to say about em and most people Ive talked to love em. The experience had me thinking for a minute it might be time to switch brands, but the more I think about it the more I say why?

I wonder if they were talking about returns from customers, or if they broke when shipped to them.

Dobyns is what I've used primarily for the last 3-4 years. I've had multiple inserts come out of the guides, but not a single broken rod. I've never heard of that being a problem with Dobyns.

I've had two broken rods. One happened on a cast and Dobyns replaced it for free. The other one was my own stupidity and I went through the replacement process. I have a bunch and had no other issues.

Ive been fishing Dobyns for years and only broken one, a DX703 on the first hook set. Spoke with Gary and sent it to them, had my new rod within a week of when they received the broken one. I love their rods and their customer service, I wont be getting rid of mine anytime soon. I think people abuse the rod replacement program, thats probably why that number is so high...

Had 15 Dobyns, 10 Fury and 5 Champion. Bought two CB rods, one broke while taking a CB off a dock pillar and another broke just as I had a 4lb fish to the boat. Landed the fish however. Bought another and it snapped fighting about a 5lb fish, didn't land that one. I love the Champions but I won't buy anymore of the Fury series. Thought for $109.00 it was a great cost effective option. But, can't afford losing fish due to rods breaking. I now own 6 Champions and have replaced the Fury CBs with Bucoos and have had no problems in the last 3 months. Used the $60 replacement warranty thru Lake Fork Resort. Probably should have called Dobyns, so that's my fault. But, still, can't have rods breaking and I didn't have good luck with the Fury series.

I agree that some step on them, slam them down, etc. and use the warranty that way. All three breaks were on deals that they should not have broken, not due to my own stupidity.

This is not to say that I won't buy Dobyns Champions. I love the feel of that series and have zero issues with that line of rods.

I've owned 15-20 and have broken 3. One was an 806sb that had previously pulled up pallets, brushpiles, and god knows what else out of 20 ft. I sat on it while it was hanging off the front deck. You would have thought a gun went off. The other 2 broke on casts and I assumed had been knocked around by me prior to them breaking. Just part of it. All were replaced using the warranty/replacement program no questions asked, even after explaining I sat on one.

I also have a abused 734 champ that's probably 6 years old and is on the 3rd tip, has several guides replaced, and the cork is wearing down. Pretty sure I swatted a snake with it at one point too. I don't really care for the lower lines but the Champions are hard to beat IMO.

Interesting. Just bought my first Fury 2 weeks ago for a frog rod. We'll see.

Saw last night on one of their social media posts that they are moving production to Texas from California!

I know of this shop and situation. I was told basically the same thing - that they warrantied more rods than they sold. That's high dollar inventory that goes out the door for no profit. As a business owner I completely understand and agree with their decision.

I've been fishing Dobyns rods since they first started making them and I own a couple dozen of them. Had a tip fail on a flippin stick and they made it right...broke a 805CB due to my own carelessness and they covered it on the no-fault exchange deal. I have received nothing but the best customer service from both Richard and Gary and I appreciate being able to pick up the phone and talk to them.
The move from California to Texas has been in planning for a couple of years...they will open up their new facility in Sulpher Springs.
