Its a pixel count. Each dot on the screen is a pixel. Better screens have smaller pixels.

In answer to your question, it is a PER SCREEN count.

Ok, Ill try again. A pixel is a dot which varies in size from monitor to monitor. 800x450 could be a screen size on a very small monitor or the size of a pic.

About inch count...

Good monitors will have tiny pixels, a great picture and a high pixel-to-inch count.

One more thing, a pixel count would not be 800x450, thats likely an image size. A pixel count would be 765 pixels per inch.

I hope that helps.

I guess I thought the screen resolution was a pixel count.

Lowrance Carbon model 12 shows a resolution of 1280x800 and for the 9 1280x720
As far as qualit of picture between the two would they be the same or one be better than the other. Taking the slight difference between the 800 number and the 720 on the nine.

Thanks
Dwight

Screen pixel specs are the number of pixels horizontally and the number of pixels vertically.

If you multiply one number times the other, that gives you the total number of pixels the screen has. If you divide that by the screen measurements height X width to get square inches, and then divide that into the number of total pixels, you get pixels per square inch=pixel density.

That way you can compare image quality no matter what the screen size is.

A good example is the Humminbird Helix 5, Helix 7, and Helix 9 displays. All of them have the same spec pixel count 800 X 480 which is the same total screen pixels. The larger the display, the farther apart the pixels are=less HD.
