2018 trip

Yellowstone and Jackson Hole in September

Any help would be nice to get, will be in the Yellowstone and Jackson Hole area for 4 or 5 day and would like get a day or two of fly fishing end. Don’t plan on using guides this year.
Then we will be moving on to Idaho and Oregon to get some more fly fishing in, hope to fish 5 or 6 states this trip.

Hike a mile on most streams in YNP that aren't affected by thermal water (Nez Perce, Firehole, etc.) and you'll be fine. You're also probably better picking one that shops don't talk about.

And, a lot of the tributaries that have spawning cuts (bigger fish) will be back on the main water by September. So, if you want bigger fish, consider that.

I'm planning a similar trip next July-August, just adding Montana and the Dakotas.

personally, i'd avoid the combat fishing in yellowstone

if you like solitude while you fly fish hit the tri-river basin south of alpine

lots of native cuts with bad attitudes

can even do the cut-slam in a single day

and, depending on your exact location, won't bump into a single other fisherman (unless they're in the car with you)

enjoy
