In January, I sent a written, SIGNED hardcopy request, via certified US mail, to the national records service to obtain a copy of my service record book.

Today, I received an email from that service center, asking for my signature to "authorize release of the information".

Apparently, my first signature must be no good.

?? Not that I recall.

I had to hand-deliver that file folder to a couple different places over those years, and I don't remember it being very big. But at the time, it was an unimportant detail to me, and my memory of unimportant details is not always very reliable.

Uncle Zeek...dont know if you did (first time) or not, but make sure you sign with ink color other than black. Ive had to provide official signatures on a few docs recently and it was required. I asked why and was told two reasons:
1) Makes original copy stand out when dealing with stacks and stacks...etc.
2) Photocopier technology has advanced to where copies can be made to look like original signatures.

Dont know if thats bs or not, but point #1 makes sense...at least intuitively.

Zeek. Instead of going through the trouble of dealing with the government just go buy your service record on the dark web. Its got to be there somewhere.

Uh ... uh ... aw, dragon dung. I have no idea - I faxed it to the number they gave. Will see how long it takes to get some kind of response.

Run for public office and see how fast your records take to show up.

Is the service record book the same as an Official Military Personnel File, which I understood was the be all, end all when it comes to military records

Especially if you're a republican.
