I'll be down to work at the Sportsmans Outdoors Fest in Houston and I'd like to get a line wet but will need to do it from the bank. What are some of the best spots in the Houston area to do so. Not looking for your secret spot but just a spot to maybe catch a few fish. I'm from Michigan and will be down a few more times later this year so I'll hopefully be able to rely on some of you (or y'all) to help me out!

THANK YOU

Galveston Island is an hour's drive southeast of Houston. If the surf is calm and the water green you can hit it at dawn or dusk for speckled trout, Spanish macs, or whatever is lurking beneath the waves (see story today on 14 foot tiger shark caught from beach a couple hundred miles south of Galveston). If the water is a little too rough to wade fish the surf you can access West Bay at Galveston Island State Park and wade for redfish, trout and flounder. Just remember to do the Gulf Coast shuffle to gently nudge any stingrays out of your path.

Correction - the shark was a hammerhead, not a tiger. Would not want to encounter either species when waist deep though.

This sounds awesome! I've fished for speckled trout and redfish before on the Florida side of the gulf so I'm a little familiar. Might have to give it a try!

Tight Lines!

It is difficult timing your schedule with when the surf is calm and green so I would suggest focusing on bay fishing and then possibly hitting the surf. Either place, fishing dead or live shrimp under a popping cork is the best way to ensure you catch at least something. A good multi species lure is a silver or gold spoon.

Freshwater: most bayous and lakes in community parks around the Houston area have bass, sunfish, catfish and possibly other catchable fish (e.g. crappie, tilapia). There are countless possibilities that you can find using a little research on google maps and the internet. Just as an example, tHere is a good website on fishing in the Woodlands which is a northern suburban area of Houston (fishinginthewoodlands.com).

Good luck and let us know how you did!!

More than likely UP is upper peninsula as in the upper part of Michigan. East end of Galveston island is where I caught a 24" speckled trout a few years ago along with some smaller ones on live shrimp. Also caught sheepshead and small blacktip shark. So tell me now where is the best place to catch walleye within a hundred mile radius of Grayling. I might be headed that way before it freezes over.

My dear football buddy who tragically passed several years ago used to love for the water to be green when he went fishing around Galveston. We still miss him on our football message board.
