Woke up bright and early this morning and decided on a whim to hit the local lake. I was on the water a little before 6 and it was incredibly peaceful. As I was paddling the tube across the lake I had a friendly beaver come by to say hello. He must have been curious about the tube because he swam an entire circle around me before heading off to do whatever important beaver stuff he had on the agenda. I took it as a good sign.

As is normally the case on Athens, the sunfish were ready and willing. I began to get into fish almost immediately and the action was pretty much non-stop until about 9 or so.

For the most part the fish were pretty good. Most of them ran a solid 7=8 inches with a few dinks thrown in the mix. I didn't keep count but I know I took at least 35 fish today. There were about 10 fish that would have been between 9 and 10 inches. Got 4 or 5 shellcrackers and 1 redbreast with the rest being gills and gill hybrids. As I was getting ready to leave my favorite spot I had a big snapping turtle surface less than 5 feet from me. That is one of the reasons I love a float tube, nothing is spooked by it.

Wrapped up the day of fishing in a little cove across from the boat ramp. It was full of little fish but I did get one decent gill and one pretty good shellcracker. Bad thing was I had a boat with 2 clowns in it that decided to pretty much crowd me out. I have never seen that boat before and one of the clowns asked me if I fished the lake much because they wanted to get into the big sunfish. I told them this was the first time I had fished it and I couldn't help them with the big sunfish. I figured if they were going to crowd me out I'd just relinquish the spot without giving them any info on where else to fish. Crowding a float tube with a boat is pretty dangerous for the guy in the tube and I didn't appreciate it much.

When I got to my haul out place Brad R was waiting for me. He is a heck of a nice guy and we spent a few minutes shooting the bull and telling fish stories. Everything I caught today was released to fight another day. With the exception of the clowns in the boat it was a really good morning on the water.

Cheers, Y'all.

1/64th oz unpainted jighead tipped with a 1 inch long piece of night crawler. That is all I use there and it always produces.

Do you use a split shot or bobber, or do you just slip in close to your target and fish almost vertically in your tube? Can't imagine making much of a cast with a 1/64 jig.

No bobber or split shot. I only use 2-4 lb line and with a 5 1/2 foot medium action spinning rod I can cast a 1/64th oz jig about 30 feet which is all the distance I need. A float tube lets you get in tight in a manner no other boat, including a kayak or a canoe, will allow. I can get right next to a boathouse and since I am sitting at water level I can do a bow and arrow cast and get the jig 20 feet under the boathouse where nobody else can fish including the guy that owns the boathouse. As long as I do not touch the boathouse I am not trespassing in accordance with TX law. It is a very effective method.

Thanks Flags. Do you thread the worm piece on the jig like you would a curly tail or do you fish it more like a wacky rig? I'm going to try to make it to Athens during this cooler period and want to try your method. I'll be in a Bass Buster so probably won't be able to fish the boat houses as effectively as you.

I hook them like a tube jig or curly tail. I will probably be on the lake Sat morning about 30 min before sunrise. I hate fishing when it gets really hot so I fish the early morning.

Good running into Flags the other day! He had another successful time catching fish from his float tube. I was over under the bridge dodging the heat until some friends arrived, had only bass tackle with me. I read in other places that it was supposedly slow that day (Saturday) on Athens but I caught 6 LMBs with a drop shot pretty fast . . . fishing slow.

Flags knows this already, that there on the north corner of the 2495 bridge is a bit of gravel in shallow water and for whatever reason there are more sorts of panfish occupying that area than most others. It'd be a great place for someone looking to catch a specimen for a fish tank I guess. Trouble is, they are not very big so it wouldn't attract anyone looking for large bluegills and such.

Avoiding heat is a big deal in August. Getting out early or knowing how to find shade really works well!

Brad
