Might be a dumb question, but has anyone used their livewell as a bait tank? Was going to use my 25 Gallon livewell to keep shad in, but figured they might die quickly...I have an aerator, and can reCirc...thoughts?

If, it was insulated, somewhat oval or round, had a filter, and had aeration it would work. I built filters for mine, and they are just too small to be effective, so I still use the Grayline and fish on.

Wont work most r not round enough they run in the corners and kill there self also u need to add salt to keep the slim and freshness for them not good for a bass boat

I have a Kenner 22' with 1 bait tank and 1 live well. They are both smaller than the grayline tanks. I use the back one for shad. In the hot summer time they don't last long at all. Even if I add salt and other things. As long as its not 100 outside it works pretty good. I do drop a pump in there and pump the water over a homemade filter screen that I have with poly-fiber, a filter element and a screen to get all the scales out and aerate the water. I don't have room for a grayline or I would do that due to them being so much better. I think my tank holds 15 gallons, the corners are rounded and it is insulated. I also add some ice in the summer to keep it cooler. I use a frozen milk jug so as to not contaminate the water any more. I think volume and rounded with additives is the key with a filter pump.

Tank design is important especially when the water temps start getting in the mid 70s and up. I believe that no matter what tank you have it is best to catch bait close to where you are fishing particularly when the lake is choppy. A long ride across a choppy lake is tough on the bait. Before I bought a tank I put shad in my livewell on the bass boat and they did OK in cool weather.

I have a Mako 2201 with a 24 gallon live well and 22 gal. bait well, both with Maxair aeration. Couldn't keep shad alive over 2-3 hours. Gave up and bought a 24 gal. Grayline tank last week from the new owner in Mead Ok. These tanks are amazing! Getting on the lake at 4am to catch bait and not having to worry about them dying before we start fishing is well worth the $400.00

I have the Kenner 2103 and looks just like your boat 2201CC! I know Mako bought out Kenner in 09 or 10. I was wandering if a Grayline would fit in that exact spot. It kinda worries me about blocking the boxes. I use those 3 boxes constantly. I wish that seat was removeable and it wouldn't be an issue for me. I may have to do what you did. How is it working for ya?

I use my livewell on teh Bluewave for holding bait all the time. I have a water circulation system on a timer that comes on at intervals (1 on 1 off, 3 on 1 off, 5 on 1 off). If it's hot, I go 1 on 1 off. Even shad stay alive all day. It's not a ideal as the oval types, but it does ok. For all other baits, its perfect.
Good luck, Tim

Good luck, Tim What size and how many Shad are you putting in there? I guess it's about 30 gallons. I've had up to 30 2- inchers in there. It works well enough for me not to consider getting an oval one. Granted, I don't fish with shad often enough to make that much of a difference.

24 gallon Tank measurements: 16" wide x 24" length x 24" height. I pulled the the entire box that the 3 boxes are in and drilled a hole through the back to run the power from the stern up the port gunwale. Lost the use of 1 of the little boxes inside but it keeps the wires from being exposed when i'm not using the tank or it's not in the boat. I have to say the tank is awesome! He has a 17 gal that's the same footprint but 17" tall. Perfect size to fit all the bait I need for one morning for myself and 2 other fishermen. Besides, anything larger than the 24 and the space starts to get tight. After "trying" to keep shad in livewells for all these years I wish I would have bought this years ago.
